Wawa’s 38th and Spruce location, the one that hasn’t closed (we’re still bitter Wawa!) has added some serious technology to its fountain soda machine. You can now add flavor shots of cherry, chocolate, raspberry or vanilla to your favorite carbonated beverage.

We love the Illadelph blog, especially when the mysterious blogger brings out the big bat against crappy development and planning.
Today the targets are the likely restaurants that will be part of Philly Live at the sports complex and Wawa for their abandonment of the city in favor of “sprawling unsustainable, oil-addicted suburbs.”
Don’t stop now, you’re on a roll!

Chefs like cheap eats too. Jose Garces dines at Taqueria Veracruzana. Noble’s Steven Cameron has taken a liking to Mama’s Vegetarian and Taco Loco. Pho at Pho & Café Viet Huong is Lacroix’s Jason Cichonski’s choice. But who admits to heading for Wawa’s “Junior” turkey hoagie.

Early Feedback from the Piazza
Living on the Vedge tells us about a promising margherita pizza and a salad at Vino that will hopefully be “figged out” next time. [Living on the Vedge]

Elsewhere In New
It was practically a stampede on opening day at Sweet Ending. “Solid, but not knee-buckling” is the verdict from Living on the Vedge [Living on the Vedge]
We only provided crappy nightime iPhone pictures of Silk City’s beer garden. Luckily Silk City has published their own. [Silk City]

Why Twitter Doesn’t Suck

Why Marketing Works
Wawa may have abandoned much of Center City but we love their Hoagiefest ads so much we’ll probably seek them out anyway. [Wawa]

Wawas are retreating from Center City and it looks like there are a couple of contenders to their throne. Old Nelson and 24/7 stores have wasted no time jumping in where Wawas were.
Old Nelson has most recently replaced the 20th and Chestnut Wawa location while you’ll now find 24/7 at the corner of 2nd and Christian.
So what do you think? Which replacement do you prefer.

Johnny Goodtimes is fed up with
Wawa and he’s not going to take it. According to Goodtimes the 20th and Chestnut Wawa is closing at the end of the month and other Center City locations will shut when their leases are up. A commenter says the 17th and Arch location will be closing in May.
Goodtimes is done with Wawa and urges others to give up their Wawa habit as well. Disturbing news indeed.

Once again, Drew Lazor of the Citypaper has been working while we’ve been drinking… he has updates on Time, Earth Bread & Brewery and, most important for lamenters of the recently deceased Wawa at 20th & Locust, the scoop on what is going on at the former Kitchen USA at 20th & Spruce Streets, which will now be known as Food & Friends Neighborhood Market:
The space will have a high-end feel — gourmet sandwiches and groceries, artisanal cheeses, organic produce, La Colombe coffee and more. The best news of all? One half of the market will be dedicated to takeaway beer — local, national and international choices…
As former customers of KUSA, we applaud this change.

Jerome Nottingham IV has some more on the closing of the Rittenhouse Square Wawa, the fifth Center City Wawa to close since 2000.
Wawa closed about 20 stores nationwide last year, including two in Center City, according to Wawa spokeswoman Lori Bruce.
“This is not the beginning of a pullout of Center City Wawa’s,” said Bruce, who disputes rumors that the company is focusing on building Super Wawas, which are larger and include gas pumps.
Wawa has opened six stores in Philadelphia since 2004, but none in Center City.
