Supper for Brunch? With Menu…

Posted by Kirsten Henri on 11th April 2008

Supper, of which I am unabashedly a big, dorky fan, serves Sunday brunch. Somehow, I did not know this.

Unlike Sunday Supper, their monthly prix fixe dinner that only happens on the first Sunday of the month, brunch is served every single Sunday, from 11a.m.-4p.m. We’ve got the menu after the jump: steak and sweet onion benny, anyone?…

Three Bells For Supper

Posted by Foobooz on 18th February 2008

Soup at Supper

Craig LaBan pours the praise on for Supper, the South Street, small plates restaurant that he calls “one of the most exciting restaurants” he’s reviewed in the last six months.

When Supper’s menu advertises a “short rib,” you’re really going to get a short one.

But my goodness, that piece of meat melts in a way I haven’t experienced in a while. It’s the result of more than 36 hours of slow poaching, finished with a glaze of grainy mustard sparking against the earthy sweet-and-sour of a bitter chocolate and raisin sauce. Sided with tender baby turnips, carrots and brussels sprouts, I can see why it costs $19.

Lavishing that kind of attention on quality ingredients, spinning them with detail into inventive combinations, is the ultimate justification for these prices. And Supper, thanks to chef Mitch and his talented chef de cuisine Brinn Sinnott (ex-Lacroix), delivers at a high level with admirable consistency.

Spot Review: Sunday Supper

Last night, we checked out Supper’s monthly $35 three-course prix fixe “Sunday Supper” and we highly recommend the experience. With reservations. Meaning, you need to make them and you should be aware of a few things:

Philly Mag Top 50

Posted by Foobooz on 24th January 2008

Osteria

Philadelphia Magazine has come up with their first ever list of Philadelphia’s top 50 restaurants. Osteria came up on top but it’s some of the other choices that are sure to create some controversy. For example Le Bec-Fin is 26th and the Standard Tap, 11th. Marc Vetri’s other spot, Vetri was 7th.

But defining what makes a restaurant “best” was the subject of months of debate. We took into account food, atmosphere and service, of course. But we also considered even more amorphous ideas like value, consistency, identity and ambition. And every once in a while, we simply found ourselves charmed, as foodies often are, by bold ideas. After that, we argued, narrowing the region’s 8,000-plus restaurants to a list of 80 contenders and then to our final Philly Mag 50.

Among the other notable selections, brand new Supper is 14th and four Stephen Starr restaurants (Striped Bass (8), Morimoto (10), Barclay Prime (16) and El Vez (35)) make the list.

Supper

Supper

Trey Popp provides an excellent critique of the good and the bad at the ambitious Supper.

Intellectual cooking begets sharper-than-usual criticism. But verdicts deserve a proper context. When Supper fell short for us, my wife and I found ourselves reaching into memories of transcendent meals in Spain to describe the shortfall. So even if the restaurant doesn’t belong in that class, its ambition and occasional triumphs place it in rare company in Philadelphia. If you can put your hankering for an old-fashioned supper aside, you just might find something that excites you in a whole new way.

Not Your Typical Supper

Posted by Foobooz on 10th December 2007

Supper

Rick Nichols visits Supper on South Street and has finds the dishes and the name don’t jive even if those dishes are “often delicious.”

Supper is an appealingly great American space – floating hatbox chandeliers, comfy bolsters splashed with color, an inviting bar (though without the capability during my visits to make a decent Manhattan), big-paned windows on the street, rustic rafters, a wide-open kitchen, and, yes, sturdy tables.

The flavors, too, are artfully, and often deliciously, rendered; the dishes nicely presented. But there’s a bait-and-switch quality to that name. Any resemblance to supper, real or imagined, is purely coincidental: With hors d’oeuvres of deboned Moroccan chicken wings, wine-poached mission figs stuffed with mascarpone, and finger sandwiches of smoked duck and quince-paste membrillo, “Global Dish” would be a better fit.

Supper

Adam Erace is early on the scene at Supper, the South Street spot that has foodies buzzing.

In the seaglass-framed foyer, bountiful baskets of gleaming Granny Smiths are the first clue that farm-fresh ingredients are the stars. In the hands of Prensky and chef de cuisine Brinn Sinnott, sweet potatoes taste sweeter and apples are crisper. Roasted fingerling potatoes—nestled in a sandbox of kosher salt, star anise, peppercorns, fennel seeds and coriander—are a study in simplicity. Their papery skins tear away like gift wrap, revealing steamy spuds inside.

Modern flavor pairings—flirty licorice with smoked veal sweetbreads, sour passion fruit with ocean-scented tilefish, Berkshire pork belly with quince poached in red wine and miso—are playful without sacrificing ingredient integrity.

Supper Opens Tonight

Posted by Foobooz on 19th October 2007

Supper

Supper on South Street across from Whole Foods opens tonight and Daily Candy has some background information for us.

Supper, the brainchild of Mitch and Jennifer Prensky (The Global Dish Caterers), is organized around the concept that eating should be both comfortable and invigorating. With two full bars, lounge seating, and a menu of inventive rustic options, Supper is the perfect American brasserie.
