Between Barack and baseball (and our trip to Seattle) we let a few things slip through the cracks in the past month, one of which was a request from Doug Hager and Kelly Schmitz, proprietors of the hopefully-open-by-Beer-Week-German-beer-bar Brauhaus Schmitz which now has an official website if you want to check it out or sign up for a mailing list.
Doug and Kelly would like to know what the Foobooz readers think about the issue of uniforms for their staff. Per Doug:
Kelly and I go back and forth regarding staff uniforms. I think the waitresses should wear Dirndls and she thinks it is too much ‘kitsch’. we would love to hear what the public has to say.

Adam Erace visits 6th and Bainbridge and the latest bit of France in the area,
Bistrot La Minette.
Meats are sourced from D’Artagnan, and [owner Peter] Woolsey shines brightest when cooking them. Whether it’s the crisp-skinned duck a l’orange with sunchokes and broccoli; the gloriously charred, hand-butchered, grass-fed rib eye; or the falling-apart lamb shank braised for three hours in the Gascony style with carrots, turnips, tomatoes, anchovies and gobs of red wine, he possesses a to-the-millisecond intuition for exactly when to pull cuts from the stove and the stock pot.

Rejoice, forlorn fans of the recently deceased Ludwig’s, the last German-style beer hall in Philadelphia! That sweet, sweet orange transfer sign pictured above is just for you, as it’s delivering big big BIG beer news. As the cherry on top of our Oktoberfest coverage, we’re bringing it to you first: a new German beer hall is coming to Center City. The orange sign was just slapped up in the window of 718 South Street last night by owners Doug Hager and Kelly Schmitz, who expect to open Brauhaus Schmitz in March of 2009, just in time for Beer Week, (if construction and government bureaucracy don’t gum up the works). Why should you be excited about this, other than the fact that SOMEONE IS FINALLY OPENING A GERMAN BEER HALL? How about twenty taps of German beer? 100 bottled beers? Bratwurst sold by the meter? Lots more details, a photo and rendering after the jump.

We haven’t heard from Sloth Street for awhile but the site gets our attention with talk of a secret society of Gluttony and outlandish behavior like ordering a lamb osso bucco sandwich At Ansill Food + Wine for dessert. We salute you Sloth Street.
Our main courses were really dominated by the aforementioned osso bucco sandwich, which might be one of the best dishes in Philadelphia. It’s got a meaty richness that gets better with every bite, including the final ones, where the slice of brioche bread has soaked up all of the juices and creates an intense taste that, well, might cause a man to order a second helping for dessert.

It’s David Snyder’s second week on the job as a City Paper food critic and he gets some wine suggestions into his review of Hostaria da Elio, a small BYOB on 3rd Street off of South.
Hostaria da Elio is a sure bet for Italian classics. But If Sgambati has a signature dish, it’s his handmade gnocchi. The sweet potato variety in a basic spinach cream sauce is a must-have — the tender, ethereal morsels practically float from your fork to your tongue, where they melt into a warm, lasting memory.
