Shank’s & Evelyn’s Last Day Is Thursday

Posted by Foobooz on 28th April 2009

Shank’s & Evelyn’s last day in South Philadelphia will be this Thursday. Then it’s 6 to 8 weeks until they open on 15th Street near Sansom at the former J.B. Pastrami’s. Some of the old classics like tripe and veal scaloppinni won’t make the trip to Center City, hopefully the old school vibe and even the Benito Mussolini photo do make the journey north. Visiting Shank’s

Posted by Foobooz on 10th April 2009

Shank’s & Evelyn’s is “relocating” from its South Philadelphia location of almost 50 years and considering a spot near the Union League at 15th and Sansom. Rick Nichols visits the institution now in its final days at 932 S 10th Street.

Quick Bites Part 1

Posted by Foobooz on 26th March 2009

We’ve got so many Quick Bites today we’re breaking them in half. Here’s part 1.

Stephen Starr will not be purchasing the Broad Street Diner. This makes us sad. [The Insider]

Shank’s & Evelyn’s is closing at the end of April. This also makes us sad. Their new location might be 15th Street in Center City. This makes us happy. [The Insider]

How many unique kegs did Memphis Taproom go through during its No Repeat Beer Week? 128! That’s a lot of different beer.

The Washington Post’s Beer Madness has Troegs Hopback facing off against Ommegang Hennepin (Official Foobooz house beer of Summer ‘07) in the finals. Harrisburg’s finest is trailing  but it looks like votes are still being accepted. [Washington Post]

It certainly isn’t Morimoto at the ballpark but it’s worth noting that Campo’s is the new cheesesteak vendor on Ashburn Alley at Citizens Bank Park. [The Insider]

We had that Craig LaBan was nominated for a James Beard Award Monday but not  for what he was nominated. It was this story about John’s Roast Pork owner John Bucci Jr. that got him the nomination. [James Beard Foundation]

Tony Luke Jr. has a starring role in The Nail: The Story of Joey Nardone whic is premiering tomorrow as part of Cinefest ‘09. [Inqlings, Philadelphia Inquirer]

Shank’s & Evelyn’s to Close?

Posted by Kirsten Henri on 23rd March 2009

Disturbing news on the Old School South Philly front.

A sign posted in Shank’s & Evelyn’s, the luncheonette on South 10th Street that has been serving up breakfast, lunch and sass since 1962, states that they are closing up shop on April 30th and relocating. No mention of where exactly they might be moving to… here’s the frustratingly vague information from the website:

In 2009, Shank’s plans to close it’s original location and open Shank’s Original at new locations in Philadelphia. Some of the famous original sandwiches will remain on the menu in a new form, without compromising the authenticity and taste.

Did their mention in GQ make them want to expand? Was the Shank’s-inside-of-a-bar concept that they launched last April in the Northeast so successful it made them want to pack up and move on?  More to come…

Two Entries in the Encyclopedia of Sandwiches

Posted by Kirsten Henri on 7th February 2008

Esquire – the magazine that inexplicably called the Friendly Lounge one of the best bars in America (though they redeemed themselves by also including Southwark) – put together an “Encyclopedia of Sandwiches” in their March issue and two Philly sandwiches made the cut: the roast pork with provolone from John’s Roast Pork and the chicken cutlet from Shank’s & Evelyn’s.Francine Maroukian, who made the picks, is a Philadelphian (and a great and prolific food writer) so we can’t argue with her cred.

Any other sandwiches that you might have included, should Esquire have asked you to pick?
