A Belgian Brewery Prez In Town

Posted by Foobooz on 26th October 2009

kwak_glassJack Van Antwerpen, President of Exports for Bosteels Brewery in Belgium is in town tonight and tomorrow. If you’re any kind of beer person you’ve enjoyed one of their beers and if you haven’t, you owe it to yourself to have one.

  • Kwak is as known for its unique glass (originally designed to hang from mail coaches) as for its deep amber tastiness.
  • Tripel Karmaliet is a Belgian tripel that is made with three kinds of grain; wheat, oats and barley. It’s a Foobooz favorite of favorites.
  • Deus is described as a symbiosis of brewing a beer and creating a sparkling wine.

Tonight the beer and Van Antwerpen are going to be at Tria Rittenhouse and the Fermentation School. Kwak will be on draft at the 18th and Sansom location for $5.50. Bottles of Tripel Karmeliet will be $6.50 and glasses of the Deus are $7.50.

The class with Bosteels and St. Feuillien at the Fermentation School was so popular they’ve added standing room tickets. Currently there are just four tickets remaining.

Tomorrow the Pub on Passyunk East is hosting Van Antwerpen for a Bosteels night. The P.O.P.E will feature Tripel Karmaliet and Kwak on draft plus bottles of Deus from 7 to 11pm. There will also be special desserts (Belgian waffles?) available.

Mark Your Calendar

Posted by Foobooz on 4th August 2009

calendarFoobooz isn’t just a blog, it’s also a calendar of events. Mark your calendar with these fun things that are coming up.

Tonight, the P.O.P.E. is hosting a New Holland Brewing night. Four New Holland beers including the tasty and devastating Dragon’s Milk.

Fork is hosting an Allagash Beer Dinner on Thursday, August 13th. $55 includes beer and dinner.

On Thursday, August 20th the Sidecar Bar & Grille hosts a funky reggae party sans Red Stripe but with plenty of Blue Point brews.

Also at Fork, owner Ellen Yin is hosting an Edible World excursion around Washington Avenue in South Philly on September 10th.

Don’t mess up and accept that invitation for the wedding you think is a total sham on October 3rd. You’d much rather send regrets and head out to the Midtown Village Fall Festival.

You can subscribe to the Foobooz calendar in any number of ways:

Papal Brunch

Posted by Foobooz on 1st July 2009

Adam Erace takes in chef Peter Miller’s brunch at the P.O.P.E. and has plenty of praise.

They should be talking about his vegan French toast, a breakfast neither as epic as Sabrina’s pyramids nor as neat as Café Estelle’s stuffed pillows, but nonetheless distinctive enough to garner a special place in the pantheon of Philadelphia French toasts. Pureed raw almonds and coconut milk replace the standard custard batter, but the bread fried up just as crisp and golden, while the spicing of cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg tied the flavors back to the classic. My mom-who considers vegetarianism a misguided notion she can rid the world of one chicken- cutlet convert at a time-loved it.

The POPE, Not The Pope

Posted by Foobooz on 19th September 2008

The POPE

UWISHUNU has the details on the POPE, the Pub On Passyunk East. There’s at least one person we’ve met recently who really needs to read this.

From an actual conversation between a friend and female student on Penn’s campus.

Friend: Hey, we’re going to the POPE on Passyunk. You should come.
Student: Umm, oh I don’t know if I can go there.
Friend: Oh are you underage or something?
Student: No, I’m Jewish.

The clock is ticking and we’re getting thirstier and thirstier in anticipation of Philly Beer Week, the event that shall not be gently–oh so gently!–criticized.

Despite being called a lightweight by none other than Joe Sixpack (which is sort of an honor) we forge onwards, hacking our way through the briarpatch of events to help you find which are worthwhile. Pace, Señor Sixpack…
