PhillyFoodGuys head to Port Richmond’s New Wave Cafe (no relation to the Queen Village waiting room for Dmitri’s) to get some authentic Polish food.
The entrees were simple and delicious. “The Pierogies are just like I remember them,” mentioned Patti, whose mom used to make them at home. Fried in butter with a cheese and potato filling, these dumplings eclipsed any version that I’ve previously sampled. I found the firm exterior and the filling soft, similar to a large ravioli.

Kirsten Henri finally gives up her principle against ordering dough ahead and heads to Port Richmond and Tacconelli’s for pizza. She reserves three doughs and orders one regular, one white and one with sausage and sweet peppers.
Were they better than the average Philly pies? Yes. They had a thin, nicely blistered crust and a tomato sauce that erred on the sweet side. Were they as spectacular as the hype would lead you to believe? No. Are they one of the city’s better pies? Yes. Is it worth going through the whoop-de-do of reserving dough and then waiting another stretch for your pizza to show up? Yes, if only for the same reason it’s sometimes worth going through the whoop-de-do of waiting in an interminable line for a cheesesteak.

The sign outside may say it’s a restaurant, bar and disco but at the
New Wave Cafe in Port Richmond, you’ll come for the pierogies and other authentic Polish standards like kielbasa and borscht.

Philebrity was a bit reluctant to let the cat out of the bag but being the social servants they are, they have to share the knowledge they’ve gleamed from “crab mafia.” Yes Port Richmond is home to Philadelphia’s best Baltimore style crabs.
