Lady farmers in Pennsylvania, much like hipsters farmers in New York, are the new black. Also, the Inquirer would like you to know that Beer Week was a success. Beer Week Pick Of The Day

Posted by Foobooz on 14th March 2008

Hairy Eyeball

In the past we’ve kind of rolled our eyes at West Coast beers with their monster hopped IPAs that to us taste like a glassful of straw. But Lagunitas Brewing Company has a more varied and delicious inventory of beers, several of which will be pouring at at St. Stephens Green in Fairmount tonight from 6 to 9pm.

We especially recommend ordering a Hairy Eyeball and not just because it’s a ridiculously fun thing to say but that doesn’t hurt. And hey, their IPA ain’t bad either.

Kill The Sixtel

Posted by Foobooz on 12th March 2008

For tonight’s Philly Beer Week pick we’re going with what the Beer Week calendar blandly calls “The Local Breweries Self-Guided Tour” but we prefer to think of it as “Borg on a Bender.” Tonight seven breweries will be represented at eight bars. Your goal, kick the sixtel (a small keg) at each bar and head to the next. Pay as you go, just $4 a pint. It all kicks off at Jose Pistola’s at 6pm.

  1. Jose Pistolas - Iron Hill - Vienna Lager
  2. Good Dog - Dock Street - Satellite Espresso Porter
  3. Misconduct Tavern - Flying Fish - Bourbon Abbey Dubbel
  4. Black Sheep - Yards - Thomas Jefferson Tavern Ale
  5. Devil’s Alley - Sly Fox - Seamus Red Ale
  6. Nodding Head - Nodding Head - BPA
  7. Fergie’s - Tröeg’s - Nugget Nectar
  8. Mcgillin’s Olde Ale House - Everyone

Beer Week Report: SP Pub Crawl, Brewer’s Plate

Posted by Kirsten Henri on 11th March 2008

Beer Week is well under way and we’ve been tooling around town, checking out as many events as our hearts, wallets and livers permit.

On Saturday, one half of Foobooz attempted one half of the South Philly Pub Crawl. Since tickets were totally sold out, we did not officially participate in the event, we just sort of crawled out of our house and crawled down to meet friends at P.O.P.E. (jam-packed) where we drank Sly Fox Stout.

We’ve received word that seats remain for Chick’s Cafe’s “That’s Not Belgian” beer dinner tonight. The dinner will feature beers from everywhere but Belgium. The dinner is hosted by beer writer Lew Bryson so you’re bound to learn something interesting along the way. The dinner consists of 4 courses and 6 beers. Tickets are $55 per person.

Countdown to Philly Beer Week: Beer Week Eve

Posted by Kirsten Henri on 6th March 2008

The big week is almost here - it’s starting tomorrow, in fact. We’ve spent the past month pulling out highlights from the overflowing list of the events and, well, we’re kind of pooped before it even starts. We’re saving our strength for next week.

So today we’re asking you: what are you planning to do for Beer Week? As much as possible? Select events? Will you stick with the pay-as-much-as-you-drink events or lay out $45, $65 or even $95 for big beer dinners? Or will you just buy a sixpack of Miller Lite and pretend like it’s not even happening?
