Meju, Korean Food In Old City

Posted by Foobooz on 3rd January 2008

Elisa Ludwig checks out Meju in Old City and finds enough to like that she’d be a regular if she worked nearby.

Like the kimchee, some of the entrées taste like the chili heat has been turned down a notch — a necessary concession, perhaps, for diverse clientele. But everyone loses when dishes like soon doo boo jigae (spicy tofu stew) — which should have your nose running — are bland and brothy. Bibim bop, the sizzling bowl of rice that continues cooking at the table, takes dollops of accompanying chili paste to get it up to speed. However, the kim chee bokum bop, a similar rice bowl with the addition of spicy cabbage and thin slices of pork, is perfectly simple, perfectly good as-is.

Meju

First time we’ve seen “massive portions” in a review in a long while but that’s just what Old City Korean restaurant Meju delivers albeit at a too hectic pace.

The poor timing is unfortunate, because many of Meju’s offerings are so tasty you’ll want to linger over their singes of spice and thought-provoking twangs. The hae mul pa jun—savory pancakes with shrimp, calamari and scallions folded into the batter—makes you rethink what you know about breakfast. Stir-fried with onions and mushrooms, pork bulgogi benefits from a honeyed lacquer, while galbi (Korean-style short ribs) are tender and so flavorful I leave nothing but a pile of gnawed bones.
