Center City to Get Taste of Honest Tom’s

Honest Tom’s, the West Philadelphia food truck known for its tacos and Stumptown coffee will be at 18th and the Parkway today from 11am to sundown cooking up fish tacos.

Honest Tom’s tweeted that they are considering coming to Center City every Friday if us “Center City freaks” behave. Honest Tom is also looking for location suggestions.

DiBruno Brothers 9th Street location has added a couple of new sandwiches to its repertoire.

  • The Mad Monk – Trappist Cheese,Thinkly Sliced Red Onions and Rieker’s Veal on Black Russian Bread
  • Il Gavone – Ciabatta Bread loaded with Provolone, Prosciutto di Parma, Genoa Salami, Coppa and long hots

Free Lunch at Sampan

In order to promote Sampan’s new lunch menu Michael Schulson’s restaurant will be giving away lunch from 11:30 am to 5pm today.

Offered at the restaurant’s counter seating areas at the bar and in front of the open kitchen the free lunch will include a pork Banh Mi sandwich with chips and a non-alcoholic drink. The brand new lunch menu will also be available for purchase.

Highlights of the full lunch menu include:

  • Selection of Bahn Mi, Vietnamese hoagies served with chips and soda
    • Berkshire Pork Belly with cucumber and carrots
    • Tuna with pickle, cucumber, scallion
    • Thai basil and Meatball with Thai basil, fish sauce and lettuce
  • Shrimp Pad Thai with tofu, egg and peanut
  • Ramen Noodle Soup with scallions, BBQ pork and egg
  • Salads such as Wild Mushroom with goat cheese, puffed rice and truffle
  • Chicken Bim Bim Bop with charred rice, egg and sesame.

Prices range from $6 to $9.

New York’s Midtown Lunch has launched in  Philadelphia. Its mission will be the same as its New York counterpart, find good lunches for under $10 and tell the tales of urban lunching adventures.

Roasted Vegetable Sandwich Stands Out

Rick Nichols uncovers an Italian roasted vegetable sandwich just east of City Hall that might be the best in the city. That he means at a hole in the wall named Pasto and not the Reading Terminal makes it quite the discovery.

Tale of the Tape: Hawthornes

hawthornesToday saw the opening of Hawthornes at the corner of 11th and Fitzwater. Chris Fetfatzes and Heather Annechiarico are behind the eatery, bruncherie and bottle shop. The Fetfatzes family also own Bella Vista Beer Distributors across the street.

The Space

  • The corner space has been completely redone from its warehouse past.

What will the restaurant at 10 Rittenhouse be? Michael Klein reports Serafina or Todd English could be interested in the space. If  we had to pick just on the web sites, we’d have to go with Todd English. That Serafina site creeps us out. [The Insider]

Hawthornes is looking to open November 18th. There will be over 1,000 beers for mix-a-sixes and 16 beers available by growler. There will also be lunch and brunch. [Meal Ticket]

It’s official, Win Signature Restaurants, who run Azie on Main upstairs is renting out the rest of the Maia space for an American comfort food/bar concept. [The Insider]

Varga Bar has added a new speed lunch menu. You get a soup and a sandwich for $9 in 30 minutes flat. Among the optionss are a roasted pork loin sandwich, Kobe Chili-cheese dog and a grilled cheese. [Varga Fall Lunch]

“Next Food Network Star” contestant Katie Cavuto was rumored to be coming to South Street but she’s opening her Healthy Bites To-Go on the 2500 block of Christian. [The Insider]
