Mojitos, mahi mahi with chorizo, grilled beef tenderloin with fried yuca and cappuccino are on the menu of this Gayborhood date.
Audrey and Mark head down to ‘the neighborhood called the gayborhood’ in Center City. So much to see and do, great shopping, eating and drinking. They start out with a trip to Giovanni’s Room, the landmark bookstore, then head next door for cocktails at Mixto. Then it’s off for dinner at the fabulous rising star, Lolita where they dine on some of the most innovative Mexican dishes this side of the Mississippi. They cap off their evening with cappuccinos at Brew Haha on 12th Street.

Rick Nichols strolls the stalls at the
Headhouse Square Farmers Market on a recent Sunday taking in the sights, sounds and tastes.
“Great cities deserve great markets,” recites Nicky Uy, the laid-back, on-site manager for the Food Trust, the market’s nonprofit sponsor.
And so as farmers displayed cascades of heirloom tomatoes and polished onions, and the scent of toasting corn tortillas rose from Los Taquitos de Puebla portable griddle, there were palpable resonances of San Francisco’s Ferry Plaza farmers’ market, and (as chef Marcie Turney and her partner, Valerie Safran, shopped for greens for the Head House Square Farmers’ Market Salad they’re running as a weekly special at Lolita) of the Union Square greenmarket in Manhattan, which inspires menus at cafes on its flank.

Tony Goldman may own a lot of real estate on 13th Street between Walnut and Chestnut but it’s
Valerie Safran and
Marcie Turney who may be the “unofficial mayors of Philly’s new Midtown.”
The two helped start the 13th street revitalization with Open House, a upscale home store, then Lolita, the delicious Mexican BYOT (T for tequilla) and now they’ve opened Grocery at 13th and Chestnut.
Grocery is an upscale food market and an eat-in cafe. The extra-virgin olive oil bar, featuring a signature blood-orange variety has already been featured in Food & Wine magazine. You’ll also find some of Lolita’s flavors in the display cases including a Lolita cupcake and breakfast sandwich.
