Carlos Molina who was a longtime chef at Tequila’s now has his own place, Las Bugambilias on South Street. Craig LaBan visits and approves the authentic flavors and polished decor.
Other classic starters rose on the freshness of ingredients and a respect for simplicity. The guacamole was addictively chunky and lightly seasoned. The seviche mixto filled a glass cup of lime- and wine-splashed tomato juice with perfectly tender shrimp, flounder and crab.
Molina’s strong suit at Los Catrines/Tequila’s was always meat, and he delivers some memorable entrees here, including a tender “medallon del rancho,” a filet with poblano cream over pumpkin blossoms, and another filet special that came over an ebony dark sauce of pureed dry chiles that was mysteriously complex and addictively spicy. The skirt steak “tampiqueña,” wrapped around a Chihuahua cheese-stuffed poblano pepper, was a bit complicated texturally for its own good, but the cheese-meat-chile trio sang in warm harmony.

Adam Erace visits South Street’s Las Bugambilias and he’s impressed.
The restaurant gods have delivered unto us a savior, Las Bugambilias—a Mexican restaurant offering scrubbed authenticity that’s high on finesse and low on flash. Rejoice and be glad.

Elisa Ludwig finds lots to rave about in her review of Las Bugambilias, the South Street Mexican restaurant by Carlos Molina, a former chef at Tequila’s in Center City.
Both in atmosphere and menu offerings, Las Bugambilias fills an important niche in Philly’s Mexican restaurant continuum. It’s got the by-the-book authenticity of any of South Philly’s taquerias as well as the more gracious, have-a-few vibe of Molina’s former place of employment. Here, you have the best of both worlds — the closest equivalent might be Northern Liberties’ Las Cazuelas, but Las Bugambilias has the advantage of a bar.

The South Philly Review has a review of Las Bugambilias, the difficult to pronounce Mexican restaurant that has opened at the location of the former Primavera on South Street.
My cousin Carl and I enjoyed a delightful dining experience on all levels. Las Bugambilias is the type of place I would visit several times a month. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, service is first-rate and the prices are moderate.
Three tips of the toque to Las Bugambilias.

Try dining outside at Johnny Brenda’s where at long last they have their outdoor seating permit.
Or try the brand new Las Bugambilias which has opened on South Street where Primavera used to be.
