Just 18 days until Philly Beer Week–the most blessed 10 days in the life of Philadelphia beer drinkers–begins.
We have four events to highlight today–the celebration of beer drinking does not take the weekend off!–including a test, a ragin’ Cajun, a reading (with beer) and a bitter party…

Did you know that a woman, A. Serrill Headley, owned the Khyber in its previous incarnation? And that she stocked it with 180 beers? Unfortunately, this colorful lady just died, which is too bad, since we think she’d be fun to pal around with during Philly Beer Week. Then again, according to her obit she might be around after all:
Ms. Headley told a reporter in 1994 that her establishment was haunted. It had been some sort of a saloon since 1876, including during Prohibition, when it was a speakeasy. “After I’m gone,” she said, “I intend to come back and haunt the place myself.”

Head to one of Philadelphia’s best happy hours tonight at the Khyber and enjoy $2 Yards Pints, $1 Domestic Bottles, $1 Off Everything Else from 5 to 8 PM. Then check out Die Actor Die, a comedy show with the word Die in it twice!
Or dine on South Street as there are just a couple of nights left for South Street’s 8 Days of Eats. Perhaps try a classic South Street restaurant like Bistro Romano, Bridget Foy’s or the Monte Carlo Living Room.

Aroundphilly.com lists their top beer joints in Philadelphia. And instead of going with the obvious Belgian spots
Eulogy and
Monks, the list is made up of a “few off-the-beaten path finds for better beers and an all-around positive imbibing experience.”
- Black Door – “a bar shines like a jewel in the crown of Queen Village.”
- South Philadelphia Tap Room – “a more uptown-type corner bar has risen to offer some of the best beers around.”
-
McMenamin’s Tavern – “this bar beacons to all in this comfortably diverse quarter and serves as a meeting spot for suburbanites and locals alike.”
- The Khyber – “Few rock bars offer as discerning a beer list as Old City’s long-time place to play it loud.”
- Grey Lodge Pub – “Northeast folks continue to give thumbs up to this Bridesburg pick for up-market brews.”
Foobooz adds to the list after the jump.

Evidently there’s some kind of ugly break up going on between the
Khyber and Destroy Your Liver Sundays host
DJ Steven Bloodbath. If you’re interested in all that,
check out Philebrity for the gory details. But what we here at Fooboz are reminded, is that
there is a $10 open bar Sunday night at the Khyber. And that remains despite the breakup.
Also, the Khyber hosts one of Foobooz’s favorite happy hours. Every weekday from 5-8, $2 Yards Pints, $1 Domestic Bottles, and $1 off everything else.
