Trey Popp finds 15th Street’s
Jose Pistolas is an ideal spot for beer and sports on the upstairs flat screens.
But the place has more than exposed brick walls, a mellow vibe, a fine black pilsner on tap and Rodenbach Grand Cru in the cold case going for it. It’s also got fish tacos in three top-notch forms and one of the tastiest empanadas in town.

The bar and lounge Knock at 12th and Locust has had a soft opening and look for Jose Pistolas to open next Wednesday. [Table Talk, Philadelphia Inquirer]
Swallow on Liberties Walk is now looking at a post Labor Day opening rather than late August. The interior “will be an homage to a Parisian brothel, a nod to Northern Liberties’ history as a red-light district.” [Feeding Frenzy, City Paper]
Wolfgang’s Steakhouse out of New York is in talking about opening a Philadelphia outpost at 2040 Market St., the former headquarters of AAA. [Inqlings, Philadelphia Inquirer]
Chima, the Brazilian steakhouse that was announced just about the same time as Fogo de Chao is talking about opening its 20th and JFK location in “the first trimester of 2008.” [Inqlings, Philadelphia Inquirer]
Starting Wednesday, September 5th Shank’s & Evelyn’s will be open for dinner. “Expect to see a full menu of traditional Italian fare, from veal marsala to fettucine alfredo, with a hefty selection of chef’s specialties thrown in.” [Eat Beat, Philadelphia Weekly]

Taste Daily reveals some more details about Jose Pistolas, the burrito and beer bar that is taking over the old Copa Too spot at 15th and Spruce Streets. Expect 3 tacos for $7 and beer running the gamut from PBR to Chimay. [Tasty Daily, Philadelphia Magazine]
Mantra’s Al Paris is looking to open a new Italian BYOB near the Italian Market in the former Mezza location on 9th Street. The as yet unnamed restaurant will specialize in the cuisine of Paris’ Sicily and Naples heritage. [Feeding Frenzy, City Paper]

More details are emerging on Jose Pistolas, the burrito and beer spot replacing Copa Too on 15th Street. 12-taps, 100-bottle beer list and affordable “kitchen-crafted” Mexican food. [Feeding Frenzy, City Paper]
To the many who have asked, yes Bindi will replace the Grocery Cafe on 13th Street as owners Valerie Safran and Marcie Turney have stated “we have decided the café business is not for us.” We can take some consolation in hoping the Indian food at Bindi is just good as the Mexican at Lolita. Ly Michael’s, across from the Convention Center on 11th Street is now serving a Vietnamese menu under new chef Dung K. Dang and new partner Billy Wong. [Table Talk, Philadelphia Inquirer]

The Illadelph has a first look and name for The Georges Perrier, Chris Scarduzio restaurant set for the Comcast Center. The name is Table 31, which may seem a quizzical name till you realize that’s considered the best table at Brasserie Perrier. Table 31 will be a monster of a restaurant. More than 15,000 square feet over 3 floors. [The Illadelph]
A.D. Amorosi’s Icepack reports that the Dive is rumored to be closed or closing. This is in contrast to a recent Dive My Space bulletin says that not only are they open but they’ve got their smoking waiver. [Icepack, City Paper]
Rumor has it Copa Too won’t sit empty too long as Fergie’s ex-manager Jo Gunn is looking to open Jose Pistolas, a “beer bar with Mexican flavor.” [Icepack, City Paper]
