Jose Pistola’s has a new chef–apparently the old one is attempting to pull off a heroic feat–Brenton Wallace, most recently of Loie. He just came on board last Friday and he’ll be tweaking the menu, owner Casey Parker says, expanding, fine-tuning and just for fun, “throwing in things that will make no sense.” We believe this translates into “expect to see the menu expand far beyond south of the border”, but we’ll have to wait and see.
El Vez is running one of its Get Your Agave On tequila dinners this coming Monday, Feb. 4th. $35 gets you four courses and a Don Julio tequila tasting and lesson.
Tequila has taught us many lessons, the most important one being to respect its might.

Philadelphia Weekly checks out Jose Pistolas and enjoys the “Meximerican” fare even if it seems strange to wash it down with Chimay.
What you can get, though, is solid “Mexican” fare with gringo leanings. Presented on a pretty wooden tray, the whole chicken wings are straight Texas, glazed in sticky cayenne sauce and showered with peppery cilantro confetti. Nachos speak to the border towns along the Rio Grande. A high pile of guac manages to stay fresh beneath a deluge of shredded carnitas, refried beans, onions, pickled jalapenos, tomato, queso and sour cream. A heady breeze of Californication blows in from the Baja peninsula for the smoked swordfish and grouper tacos, which have all the tempura-battered goodness of a sun-bleached Cabo surf shack.

If Santa didn’t bring you a Wii for Christmas head upstairs at Jose Pistolas and play theirs. It’s free and goes well with their great beer selection.

Trey Popp finds 15th Street’s
Jose Pistolas is an ideal spot for beer and sports on the upstairs flat screens.
But the place has more than exposed brick walls, a mellow vibe, a fine black pilsner on tap and Rodenbach Grand Cru in the cold case going for it. It’s also got fish tacos in three top-notch forms and one of the tastiest empanadas in town.
