Quick Bites

Posted by Foobooz on 19th July 2007

More details are emerging on Jose Pistolas, the burrito and beer spot replacing Copa Too on 15th Street. 12-taps, 100-bottle beer list and affordable “kitchen-crafted” Mexican food. [Feeding Frenzy, City Paper]

To the many who have asked, yes Bindi will replace the Grocery Cafe on 13th Street as owners Valerie Safran and Marcie Turney have stated “we have decided the café business is not for us.” We can take some consolation in hoping the Indian food at Bindi is just good as the Mexican at Lolita. Ly Michael’s, across from the Convention Center on 11th Street is now serving a Vietnamese menu under new chef Dung K. Dang and new partner Billy Wong. [Table Talk, Philadelphia Inquirer]

Tequila Joe’s from the owners of Solaris Grille in Chestnut Hill has opened in Oreland. Expect Mexican fare and big margaritas. [ZAGAT Buzz]

Isla Ibiza on Girard Ave has closed after just under a year in business. No more chorizo butter for us. [ZAGAT Buzz]

Phillyist Visits Isla Ibiza

Isla Ibiza

Phillyist dines at Isla Ibiza on Girard Avenue and throws around glowing adjectives like great, excellent, delicious, delightful and wonderful. We however were more focused on this sinful combination of words, “chorizo butter.”

Isla Ibiza

Isla Ibiza

Isla Ibiza is the latest in Philadelphia’s recent Spanish food boom and Kirsten Henri takes a look at this NoLibs entry into the field.

Isla Ibiza offers more of a rustic take on the Spanish trend. The atmosphere is certainly the most homespun. The oddly configured building features a narrow front dining area that faces the street, which is partially blocked off from the main dining room and bar. The rambling space has been made inviting with yellow paint, warm lighting and colorful paintings blanketing an exposed brick wall.
Guillermo Veloso, former chef of Cuba Libre, is the executive chef. Veloso has been busy lately, also serving as executive chef at Cebu, a Filipino restaurant in Old City that opened in November. The food hes preparing at Isla Ibiza wavers from congenial and vibrant to busy and overwhelming.

Isla Ibiza

Posted by Foobooz on 27th December 2006

Phyllis Stein-Novack heads to the northern fringe of Northern Liberties and tries another Spanish restaurant, Isla Ibiza. And she finds it to be one of the best new restaurants in Philadelphia.

Nearly every dish intrigued me and I soon got what my husband calls big eyes. Specials with prices were printed on a separate sheet. I liked the variety of options and the different ways diners can order. A dinner can be made of only tapas or an entre along with a few starters. Veloso also can organize a tapas-tasting between $25 and $60 a person, depending on the number of dishes.

Three tips of the toque to Isla Ibiza.

Election Night

Posted by Foobooz on 7th November 2006

Philebrity highlights the places around town you can drink with Democrats tonight. South Philly Taproom gets down with DoubleSpeak. Philly Against Santorum will be at Lucy’s Hat Shop and Drinking Liberally will be doing just that at Tangier. And in what is kind of a Foobooz tradition, crash Rendell’s victory party at the Warwick.

Or how about some paella at Isla Ibiza on Girard Avenue. $40 for two, and the sangria is cheap too.

What am I supposed to do with all this Paella?

Posted by Foobooz on 30th October 2006

On Monday and Tuesday nights at Isla Ibiza Restaurant & Bar, Third and Girard, offers paella for two for $40.

Wash down all that paella with $2.50 glasses of red or white sangria all night on Mondays and Tuesdays. Or enjoy it Monday through Saturday during the Isla Ibiza’s late night happy hour from 10 PM to Midnight.
