New Gold Standard Cafe at 48th and Baltimore was attacked last week by vandals who splashed the storefront with paint and anti-gentrification graffiti.
There’s always been an element that talks about gentrification,” explained [University City District's Baltimore Avenue Corridor Manager, Joe] McNulty, adding that while he feels it’s a worthwhile conversation, it’s one which needs to be handled through discussion, not acts of civil disobedience. ”We need to try to find a peaceful format,” he emphasized. As for the question of why the Gold Standard Cafe was targeted, McNulty is just as puzzled as the cafe’s owners, noting that Roger [Harman] and Vincent [Whittacre] have been members of the community “for years” and that their cafe “has one of the most diverse clienteles” in the area.
