PW Pits Goodburger Against Five Guys

Posted by Kirsten Henri on 21st May 2008

Adam Erace checks out these quick-service burger joints to see which one will come up a winner. As far as cleanliness goes, it’s all Goodburger:

Cleanliness

Five Guys: Crumbs on the tables. Dried tomato scabs clotting the ketchup dispensers. Balled-up napkins on the floor. Pubes on the toilet seat.

Goodburger: Spotless. There’s even a zealous fellow in Goodburger gear vigorously wiping the walls, which I don’t even do in my own house.

Edge: Goodburger.

Ew! The only question he didn’t take on was the all-important ‘how does your digestive system feel three hours later?”

Center City Burger Round Up

Five Guys Burger

There’s been an influx of new burger spots opening up in Center City, Kirsten Henri takes a look at Bootsie’s, Copa Miami and Five Guys.

She finds Bootsie’s an expensive dud, Copa Miami, respectable, and Five Guys, “everything a fast-food burger should be.”

Quick Bites

Posted by Foobooz on 27th July 2006

Feeding Frenzy notes Loie Brasserie has a new chef, David Bilberg, formerly an executive sous chef at Matyson BYOB is now the head chef of a menu called “no frills” that is upscale without being exorbitant.
Michael Klein highlights Blue Sky Cafe, a month old Caribbean restaurant in East Norriton. Soft-shell crab tempura, and curried goat highlight a huge appetizer list. Main courses range from $14-$24.
Five Guys is getting it’s trademark red and white tile installed and promises to be open any day now.
Roberto Cafe has opened at 2108 South St. Owned by Roberto and Fernando Vincenti, the G-Ho BYOB brings your standard Italian trattoria experience to South Street. Fernando previously worked as a waiter at Radicchio and the similarities are striking. And judging by the crowds on a recent weeknight, Philadelphia did indeed need one more Italian BYOB.
The average entree is in the mid-teens and tops out at $25 for the grilled lobster.
Roberto is also opened for lunch weekdays, and accepts cash only. Patio seating is also available although as Klein describes it, “The views of the refrigeration boxes and a construction project next door are hardly transporting.”

Five Guys Coming To Center City

Posted by Foobooz on 7th July 2006

Five Guys

The suburbs definitely have better retail than Center City, and occasionally the ‘burbs have an culinary nugget over downtown, and that really gets Center City residents’ goat. But one of those nuggets is coming to 1527 Chestnut Street, the burger joint, Five Guys is planning on opening the week of July 17th, inspectors willing.
For the uninitiated, Five Guys is a burger chain out of Washington DC that does burgers and fries right. Especially fries, fried in delicious peanut oil.
The Chestnut Street Five Guys will be the area’s fourth, joining Clifton Heights, Glen Mills, and Wayne, PA & Audobon, NJ.
