Sticks, Stones & A Name That Hurts Us A Little Bit

Posted by Kirsten Henri on 13th February 2008

Oh, look! Scoop on a new bar-with-food on East Passyunk Ave. from the owner of the now-defunct Felecia’s (which has still not yet opened as Devil’s Den). It will be called Sticks & Stones, which we don’t love, but we love the idea of a new spot on E. P’unk that is neither Italian nor Mexican…

“It is not an Italian gastropub,” says owner Nicholas Miglino of Sticks & Stones, his forthcoming resto-bar at 1909 E. Passyunk Ave. What is it then exactly, Mr. Miglino? He can’t say for sure, citing thin-crust pizza, nachos, lamb burgers, roasted organic chicken and a turkey-and-stuffing sandwich that he “can’t freaking wait to make” as items that might or might not appear on his menu.

He’s anticipating a mid-April opening, if the PLCB plays nice.

Kenzinger Beer

The Bite has good things to say about the newly opened Yakitori Boy, looks forward to lobster corn dogs at the Devil’s Den and spills the hops on the names of the new Philadelphia Brewing Company’s initial brews.

Quick Bites

Posted by Foobooz on 17th January 2008

A couple of places that we’ve mentioned in the past now have names. Konstantinos Pitsillides’ Greek BYOB at 10th will be known as Kanella and Spruce. Alison Barshak’s second restaurant will go with Alison Two, which puts it near the top of the unfortunate names list. [Food & Drinq]

Speaking of unfortunate names, Bottom of the Sea is opening a location on the 700 block of South Street in the former Kama Sutra/Frank DiCicco campaign headquarters. [Feeding Frenzy, City Paper]

Blue In Green which we first mentioned was returning back in October is just days from opening on Chestnut Street. [Table Talk, Philadelphia Inquirer]

Devil’s Den, the gastropub at 11th and Ellsworth is hoping for an early February opening. Expect a focus on German and local beers. [Feeding Frenzy, City Paper]

Devil’s Alley owner Susan Schilisman is bringing her Sam’s Grill concept the corner of 11th and Sansom. [Table Talk, Philadelphia Inquirer]

If you believe the orange placards it looks like Del Frisco’s steakhouse is really coming to the Packard building at 15th and Chestnut. [Philly Chit Chat]

Oh great, Ho Sai Gai’s long closed 10th and Race location is going to return. Sorry we’re not more excited but growing up our phone number was one off from theirs and we received lots of late night drunk dials requesting wonton soup. Lets hope the number is different this time around. [Table Talk, Philadelphia Inquirer]

Their Satanic Majesties Request

Drew Lazor has another menu exclusive on The Clog from the soon-to-open Devil’s Den in South Philly.

With a Devil’s Alley already established in town, we’re wondering what made the proprietors choose such a similar name for what is not an especially different concept? This happens quite a bit in Philly – witness the Tria, Trio, Triada confusion or the prevalance of BYOBs that start with M. Or Italian BYOBs.

Memphis Taproom

The Bite takes a look at some of the new restaurants that have us salivating for 2008.

Bistro 7’s Michael O’Halloran second restaurant now has a name, The Waverly and is looking to open in April. Jose Garces’ Mexico City themed Chilango is looking at June. Nodding Head alums are opening a new spot, the Memphis Taproom north of Berks in “Port Fishington” and the Devil’s Den in South Philly is promising 28 taps shortly.

Quick Bites

Posted by Foobooz on 25th October 2007

Depending on who you believe Vango has an opening day set. Icepack reports it being Saturday, November 10th. However an ad on page 64 of City Paper lists the date as this Saturday. Vango soft-opens Saturday with an official opening set for November 10th. Michael Fee who has experience at Nobu is the chef. [Icepack, City Paper]

G, downstairs from Davio’s sounds pretty cool. And big. This 10,000 sqft lounge is set to debut November 29th, it’ll have Philadelphia first like “movable wall panels and ‘electronic wallpaper,’ projection technology that can change the mood of the lounge in a few clicks.” [Feeding Frenzy, City Paper]

Le Virtù is just about set to open at 1927 E. Passyunk Ave. Shockingly this isn’t a BYOB. But it is Italian. [Table Talk, Philadelphia Inquirer]

Just married couple Scott and Erin Wallace who own Manayunk’s Old Eagle Tavern are transforming the former Felicia’s at 11th and Ellsworth into the Devil’s Den, a beer bar with 28 taps by the end of the year. [Feeding Frenzy, City Paper]

Butcher’s Cafe which long lived in the shadow of Sabrina’s has closed. Todd Bergman has moved on to New Wave Cafe where chef Ben McNamara has headed North to St. Stephens Green. [Food and Drinq]

You have until noon today to get tickets to Taste of Philly for just $15.
