The 2010 Winter Olympics kick off today from Vancouver, British Columbia and several local bars are ready.
Five area bars are competing in the “Bar Stool Olympics.” From February 12th to the 28th, Kite & Key, New Wave Cafe, Smiths, South Philly Bar & Grille and Swift Half Pub will be competing to sell the most $3 Molson bottles. The competition also is a fundraiser benefitting the Fraternal Order of Police Survivors Fund. Each location will also offer Canadian food specialties like poutine and Canadian Bacon. [Grub Street]
Devil’s Den is also getting in the spirit for the Olympics with Medal winning beers. During each day of the Olympics, the Den will be tapping a Gold, Silver or Bronze medal winning beer from the Great American Beer Fest.

R2L’s chef de cuisine Alex Urena has left the restaurant before it even opened and landed at Devil’s Den in South Philadelphia. Urena has an impressive resume and was the chef-owner of the well regarded Pamplona in New York.
No word on why Urena left R2L before the official opening but the move to Devil’s Den figures to bolster what has been Devil’s Den’s biggest weakness, it’s food.
A representative for Devil’s Den passed along these accolades for Chef Urena:
- 2000 James Beard nominee for “Best new Restaurant: Blue Hill”
- 2001 Gold medal winner, Culinary Excellence, American Tasting Institute
- 2006 Rising Star Chef Award
- 2006 Emerging Tastemaker Award, Food Arts Magazine
- 2007 Recipes published in Art Culinaire
- 2009 Recipes published in “New York Cooks: 100 recipes from the City’s best Chefs”
Update: Michael Klein has some more details about the shakeup.

When Devil’s Den opened they got kind of busy and never got around to a Grand Opening. But now, a year later they’re finally going to throw a big party complete with $1 off beers and a complimentary buffet.
Oh and did we mention the beers? When the event kicks off Wednesday at 7pm there will be great beers from Russian River, Bell’s, Allagash, Ommegang and many others. And because one night isn’t enough, there will be special drafts the rest of the week including rare beers like Hitachino Nest White Ale, St. Feuillien Printemps and much more.

I Am Beer Wise points out that there are a couple of brewery/bar combos to choose from this evening. Kite and Key is offering a firkin of Yards Cocoa Porter and Devil’s Den is showing off Weyerbacher’s new smoked beer, Fireside Ale. A smoked beer next to a roaring fireplace sounds pretty smart. But if you’re more Northern Liberties inclined, the Standard Tap does weekly firking tappings on Wednesdays. Tonight it’ll be Riverhorse.
