Joy Manning makes like a mad scientist and combines Capogiro’s red heirloom tomato with sea salt and basil for a tomato salad dessert.

Serious Eats has debuted a City Guide feature and they’ve gotten Philadelphia Magazine’s Joy Manning to handle Philadelphia.
It’s a good list with lots of love for Marc Vetri plus Cochon gets her nod for best BYOB and Capogiro as the must eat you have to have before you leave.

Philadining declares an Awesomeness Alert for the Espresso Granita from Capogiro. And at $3.50 it’s an absolute bargain for the pricey gelato spot. [The Philadining Blog]
We’re not sure how long Scoop DeVille has been at 18th and Chestnut but when you walk in it feels like it has been there forever. UWISHUNU provides the 411 for the uninitiated and drops this golden nugget that even we didn’t know. Scoop DeVille delivers, Vine to Pine, 21st to Broad. [UWISHUNU]
We visited Phileo for the first time as they were just trying to close up but they were nice enough to let us in anyway. Tried the tart banana, strawberry and mango yogurts swirled together topped off with some granola. We haven’t had Pinkberry in New York but we’ll be back for more Phileo.

Greetings-
We still don’t have an opening date. We’re still waiting on our liquor license approval. Our construction will be completed this week and if our approvals come by the end of the month, we should be able to open in early Sept. I have a new found awe for the bureaucracy in the Commonwealth.
We don’t think Tom is alone in his “awe” for Pennsylvania bureaucracy.

Neil Stein talks to Dan Gross, noting the wine wasn’t for him, and he’s still working on a restaurant at the Morris Hotel near Washington Square and a possible conglomeration with developer Carl Dranoff on South Broad. Dranoff has a green building planned for Broad and Bainbridge. [Philadelphia Daily News]
11th and Washington is set to be the location of Wokano, a 200-seat Chinese restaurant set to open “no later than the first of September.” [Feeding Frenzy, City Paper]
Newbold has a new bar. The former Noah’s Ark has been replaced by Station Bar & Grill. The new spot offers a serious beer and food menu. The chef wants to keep his name out of the press, who the devil could he be? [Bite This]
Penn’s campus will be getting another decadent offering to go with their soon to open Naked Chocolate Cafe. The third Capogiro will be opening in the Radian building at 39th and Walnut. Capogiro is also getting a 15,000 sqft production kitchen. We hear that will be in East Falls. [Food and Drinq]
We can just imagine the Citizens Bank Park peeps showing PETA around the ballpark trying to distract them from the cheesesteaks and Schmidters. Maybe it was how they explained no fries were injured in the production of Chickie’s and Pete’s crab fries. It must work because for the second straight year PETA has named CBP tops in Vegetarian-Friendly-Ballparks. [PETA]
White table cloth dining on Frankford between Susquehanna and Dauphin? That’s the plan at Pickled Heron. A 50-seater run by two Ritz-Carlton alums hoping to open in November. [Food and Drinq]
Joseph Poon is back, this time at 108 Chestnut Street with Joe’s Peking Duck Original 1984. Poon was originally looking at the old Griffin Cafe on the 200 block but structural problems ended that idea. [Food and Drinq]

duross & langel at 117 S 13th Street gets a lot of the inspiration for their soaps from their business neighbors. They also offer workshops and throughout the summer the are combining the workshops with a taste of the “flavors” that inspired the soaps and lip balms. Each Wednesday night in July and August, from 6 to 8pm everyone is invited to experience the process of making soaps and balms while sipping on a margarita from Lolita or sampling Capogiro’s limoncello sorbetto while brewing a fresh batch of limoncello soap.

The Bite this week dives into cool refreshing options for what to do when the heat and humidity just get to be too much. There are plenty of choices from a frozen drinking chocolate at
Naked Chocolate Cafe, gelato at
Capogiro, a Lightning Rod of a sundae at
Franklin Fountain or kick it old school with a cup of cherry from
John’s Water Ice.

Just because it’s freezing cold outside doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be eating ice cream. Or, even better, gelato! Sandwiches! Gelato sandwiches! From Capogiro! Blogalicious tells us all about them:
The tangy, woodsy rosemary-honey-goat’s milk gelato plays so well against the sweet shingles of chewy sugar cookie, and they’re also serving a spice wafer sammy with sweet potato-pecan-praline gelato.
What better to eat on an icy day than something icy and delicious? Chased by something hot and delicious?
