The Philly Food Guys head to Northern Liberties for brunch at Honey’s Sit ‘n Eat and they’ve got the photos and podcast to prove it.
Honey’s Sit ‘n Eat may not be obscure, but this Northern Liberties’ standard offers an eclectic menu, rustic atmosphere and great service. Situated on the corner of North 4th and Brown Streets, Honey’s serves breakfast and lunch all day and bills itself as a blend of Jewish and Southern food. All I know is that it’s pretty damn good.

In a review sure to get Philebrity riled up Craig LaBan drops “funky” three times in his review of Fishtown’s Ida Mae’s. But he finds the food good in the AM or the PM.
Ida’s chef and co-owner, Mary Kate McCaughey, always knew she wanted a “bruncherie” because of the sense of community that morning meal taps. And she’s a local, having grown up in Port Richmond and Fishtown, where as a girl she used to buy penny candy at the grocery Ida’s eventually replaced.
That corner space, most recently a coffee shop, was transformed by Mary Kate’s husband, Feargus McCaughey, into a charmingly cozy cafe, with a bustling counterside grill in front, and a rear dining room that feels like a well-kept parlor, with stained-glass windows, wooden banquettes, arty photos, and granite cafe tables.
Those seats hum to capacity on weekends. And though our mellow mop-topped waiter could have moved with more pep (and remembered the water, o.j., and cutlery), the kitchen works like a well-buttered machine (about a pound of it goes into the creamed chipped beef).

Honey’s serves up a crazy looking corn on the cob smothered with a bbq sauce and shredded cheese. Then fried green tomatoes and an omelet of ham, cheddar and green apples. After all that it’s off to Johnny Brenda’s for fresh donuts!

Elisa Ludwig checks out Sabrina’s Cafe and Spencer’s Too and finds it a worthy sequel to the much loved Bella Vista original.
What’s nice about SCST’s lineup is that it doesn’t sacrifice the hominess of comfort food in the name of innovation. Usually, you get both. There’s the regular stuffed French toast — half a loaf tented on your plate — with cream cheese and bananas, or the daily variety, which was a super-sweet orange-molasses-butterscotch flavor on a recent visit. There are gigantic polenta fries, golden bricks of fried cornmeal embedded with jalapeño peppers that, with a side of marinara sauce, are a meal in and of themselves.
