Bob & Barbara’s Makes Dive Bar List

Posted by Foobooz on 25th March 2009

dive1Bob & Barbara’s makes Details magazine’s list of best dive bars in America.

The owners of this dive understand that sometimes even serious drinkers need a little entertainment. On Thursdays, $6 gets you a drink ticket and a drag show. Friday and Saturday bring the Crowd Pleasers, a bluesy band specializing in “liquor-drinking music.” And it’s not like the South Street institution makes it hard for you to tie one on any other night of the week: The house special, a can of PBR and a shot of Jim Beam, is a borderline-irresponsible three bucks.

Finally! Bob & Barbara’s Is Back

Posted by Foobooz on 5th September 2008

Bob & Barbara’s is finally back in action after being shut down for more than a month by L&I.

But the bar is currently half of its former size, since the extension put on several years ago is not ready for re-occupancy. Also, because that room will house the popular drag show and live jazz nights, no false eyelashes or “Blueberry Hill” for a few more weeks.

The Regulars

Regulars

From the title to the photograhs, Philadelphia Weekly’s food issue is obviously inspired by Sarah Stolfa’s, the Regulars. Whether quizzo players, dive bar squatters or strip bar voyeurs, every bar has them and needs them. What worries us is how many of them we recognize.

It’s the last night of Center City Sips, as sure a sign of fall coming as the leaves turning colors. Then check out Jose Pistolas grand opening. It opens to the public at 8 PM.

And after washing down a taco with a Tripel head over to Bob & Barbara’s for Blue Movie Bingo. Yes, Bob & Barbara’s has combined porn and bingo.

What Is A Dive Bar?

Posted by Foobooz on 16th February 2007

Joe Sixpack tackles the question of what is a dive.

The question: What is a dive bar?

You’ve got Noah Webster, who defines it as “a shabby and disreputable establishment.”

There’s Wikipedia, which refers to a “dated or rundown appearance and atmosphere.”

And Word-Detective.Com says the name goes back to the 19th century, when many disreputable joints were located below street level. An adventurous evening out literally meant “diving into a subterranean world of bad booze and even worse company.”

OK, it’s sounding pretty negative.

But when you talk to beer drinkers, you find they have a warm feeling for a favorite dive. Several online search sites, for example, run “best dive bar” polls, and readers describe them in the kind of glowing terms that a tavern owner usually clips out and pastes onto the wall.

Bob & Barbara’s Sued

Posted by Foobooz on 5th December 2006

American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) today announced they have filed suit against ten nightclubs, bars and restaurants in eight states. And among the sued, our very own Bob & Barbara’s!

In each of the cases filed today, the business establishment had signed a license agreement with ASCAP, but failed to comply with the license’s payment terms. ASCAP reached out to each of the establishments repeatedly over a significant period of time before taking legal action — in some cases over a period as long as two years. In every instance, the licensee refused to pay the fees owed under the license, leaving ASCAP no choice but to terminate the license for default. Thereafter, the businesses continued to perform ASCAP members’ music without permission, resulting in the filing of the infringement actions.
