We haven’t heard from Sloth Street for awhile but the site gets our attention with talk of a secret society of Gluttony and outlandish behavior like ordering a lamb osso bucco sandwich At Ansill Food + Wine for dessert. We salute you Sloth Street.
Our main courses were really dominated by the aforementioned osso bucco sandwich, which might be one of the best dishes in Philadelphia. It’s got a meaty richness that gets better with every bite, including the final ones, where the slice of brioche bread has soaked up all of the juices and creates an intense taste that, well, might cause a man to order a second helping for dessert.

David McDuff heads to
Ansill Food+Wine because Sunday night is
Pif night. The prix fixe menu includes the best of David Ansill’s now shuttered French BYOB, Pif.
And McDuff points out, if everyone at your table orders the prix fixe menu it becomes even more like Pif, as corkage fees are waived.

Someone once told us that an actor’s headshot should look like that actor, not like someone else, but it should look like that actor on his best day ever.
That same holds true for a first date. You’ll want to present yourself as you on your best day ever. That brings us to our first type of first date, the false pretenses kind where you don’t have much money, but you want to impress like you do.
Foobooz would never advise lying to a loved one (or even a not-yet-loved one); that’s just not the way to begin a beautiful friendship… but…. you wouldn’t go on a date without putting on some lipstick or those jeans that make your butt look particularly hot? So why wouldn’t you put some thought into how hot the restaurant you’re going to might make you look?
If you don’t have a lot of money, you’ll have to be creative. Which means: a great restaurant on an off night, a bar with a subtle and sophisticated happy hour special and a BYOB situation with a possible trip to New Jersey for supplies. Here are two suggestions for the False Pretenses: I Don’t Have Much Money, But I Want to Impress Date…

In addition to their Ansill’s European BBQ, Ansill is also bragging they have the best air-conditioning in town, a claim that is suddenly important as we look at predicted highs of 97 degrees for tomorrow.
So where do you go when you don’t want your thighs sticking to the vinyl seats of your favorite dive’s booth?
It dawns on us that Starr’s joints are universally cool come summer. But where else is a reliable ice box?

Two weeks from today Ansill Food + Wine is throwing their “European BBQ.” We’re not exactly sure what that means but with $30 getting you two plates of roasted pig, assorted grilled meats, marinated vegetables, various salads, antipasti and a glass of house wine or draft beer we’re sure we’ll like it.
The fun starts Friday, June 20th at 6pm.
