Not for the Purists But….

Posted by Foobooz on February 8th, 2010

Craig LaBan was hesitant to try the James-hattan cocktail at Bella Vista’s James but he finds there’s lots to like in the cinnamon infused Jack Daniels based drink.

The James-hattan is a rarity in the land of fooffie drinks – a cocktail concocted with the same attention to balance as the often stunning contemporary plates that emerge from the kitchen in this sleek Italian Market gem.

I have also found James to be a very comfortable place to grab a beer. They tend to have an interesting beer or two on tap, and I am told that they will become more varied in the near future because they are changing distributors.

I like the bar at James, too, but he’s off his rocker about this drink. I didn’t enjoy it at all- bitter and unpleasant- way too heavy on the cinnamon and maybe orange peel?

Always forget about the bar at James, which is a good place to have a drink. Lots of good places to get a beer in the neigborhood, but not so many good places to get a glass of wine.

The bar at James continues to be a fantastic place to get a drink. Generally, on draft, they have one or two Brooklyn brewery beers, and the rest are mostly local (right now, Yards’ Bartholomew is one of them) along with Blue Point Toasted Lager virtually always represented (to my displeasure). They also have a fantastic happy hour: Tuesday, 9PM-11PM, Wed – Fri, 6-7PM, half off drafts, one wine and one cocktail at $6 (usually, the first one somebody orders) and free munchies (at the least, some of their house-marinated olives). And a lounge menu. And a fireplace. And it’s usually not that crowded.
