The elegant brownstone that hosted Susanna Foo for 22 years as an anchor to Walnut Street’s “Restaurant Row” is in play to become a Chipotle. Michael Klein is reporting that the Mexican fast-serve concept would serve as a flagship for the chain. A zoning variance for takeout is scheduled to be heard on February 3rd.

CHIPOTLE, Nooooo. There’s always been a battle between Qdona and Chipotle, at least amoung my friends. Qdoba wins in my book any day and twice on sunday, of course

  2. Christian Says:

Sweet. Maybe now we can get a Pret a Manger where Brasserie Perrier was and really class up Walnut Street. Ugh.

  3. Sarah Says:

    Sad.

  4. el tuerto Says:

Wow, this is sad to me.
I love Chipotle, and only liked Susanna Foo a little, but this is a big loss of character if nothing else.

  5. NDJ Says:

This is not terrible news. Accept the fact that walnut streets rents have risen and it is no longer the restuarant mecca it once was. This is a good thing as it shows real estate values are appreciating and other neighborhoods can benefit as chefs look for new space. This is a dynamic aspect of cities as they continue to evolve and improve. Walnut st is begining to resemble newberry street in Boston, which is a definitly a good thing. Don’t tease me about Pret… I love those places.

  6. MLW Says:

UGH NOOOOO! Theres a Q right down the street.

  7. Barry G Says:

I hate QDoba and like Chipotle. Been wondering when we’d get one in CC.

  8. Sara Says:

Agreed with NDJ. Let the little guys continue expanding in other neighborhoods like P’yunk, G-Ho, Fishtown….

  9. Pierre Says:

Chipotle’s burritos are better, but the menu is pretty limited compared to Qdoba’s.

  10. ENOC - Don Tanblock Says:

    I want a Baja Fresh

  11. BG Oysters Says:

Chipotle is better than Q. Better food and better design in its restaurants.

The interesting question is how a Chipotle fits into that quaint space. It sparks my imagination, and that’s why I like this project. “Flagship” opens lots of design possibilities.

Walnut is going to continue to morph in the next two years… Apple, cb2, Chipotle. It will be a chain mecca. Walnut is the street for the masses, go into the neighborhoods for local flair.

  12. Mike Says:

Actually, wasn’t Brasserie Perrier supposed to become Philly’s first Apple store?

  13. Christian Says:

If they put an Apple store where Brasserie Perrier used to be, wouldn’t that effectively spell the end for both Bundy and Springboard, two center city retailers that sell nothing but Apple products and accessories? There must be a contract or something.

  14. Foobooz Says:

Apple store is coming to 1607 Walnut Street, just down the street from the former Brasserie Perrier.
