Tomato Station

Posted by Foobooz on August 27th, 2009

Tomato Station? An unsuccessful early 90s super group? Nope, it’s the heirloom tomato station at Barclay Prime. And color us intrigued, because we really love tomatoes when they’re in season and we haven’t really had any awesome ones yet.

Starting this evening, a display table is being set up in Barclay’s dining room filled with bowls of heirloom tomatoes with fun names like Sicilian Plums, Green Zebra, Pineapple, Purple Cherokee, Sun Gold and Tiger Striped. For $20 (more than a Butcher & Singer rib-eye) diners will receive 3 varieties which are cut, plated and served to the guest in the dining room with their choice of salt (Hawaiian lava, Adler Wood Smoke Salt from Washington, or Maldon salt from England) [Editor's Note: Foobooz's mother is going to be thrilled when she hears about this. Seriously, she has at least three types of salt on her kitchen table. Seriously!] and extra virgin olive oil (Olio Verde or Frantoio Della Rocca, both from Sicily).

The tomato station is available Thursday, Friday or Saturday night. The tomatoes have been freshly picked from Branch Creek Farms in Perkasie, Pa.

Where’s the guy who complained about $19 for 3 crabs? He should be all over this “deal.”

  2. cleevus Says:

20 bucks for tomatoes? are you high? i don’t care if they come a backrub, that’s ridiculous. farmers can’t give awy tomatoes right now.

  3. Emmkay Says:

How many tomatoes are you getting for $20? Is that supposed to be your entree?

  4. Yuppie Eats Philly Says:

sounded good when i first read it…but then i remembered my own tomato plant with free tomatoes on it. if they really wanted to make this a deal, they’d include it free with any entree! don’t they know we’re in a recession!

  5. cheez wit Says:

Branch Creek Tomatoes are worth the money. The Sicilian Plums are the farmers life’s work. He has been organically growing this strain for twenty years by saving the seeds of the best tomatoes every year. You really can taste the the love in each bite. These are not your typical tomatoes from you’re yard.

  6. LeeAnne Says:

I get heirlooms every week at the Grower’s Market in Chestnut Hill for $3 per pound. I’ll save my money for my own fancy salt and still come out ahead.

    @ Cleevus

    i’m with you, brother!
    are these Tomacco or something?!

    This is insane.
I am all about spending a lot of money on food, but there is a line.
Barclay Prime is a favorite of mine too, but I’d a get a $100 Cheesteak there anyday over a $20 plate of tomatoes!

  9. Sarah Says:

Thank you, Cheez Wit! I worked at both Branch Creek and Barclay Prime, and you’d be hard-presssed to find any other tomatoes to match wits with Mark’s! No one said this was a ‘deal,’ it is a super special seasonal offering – and you know NOTHING is cheap at BP, but they do it right. This has been a really rough year for local tomato growers, and I think this is a great way to honor one of the best, if not THE best, specialty vegetable grower, Branch Creek Farm!
