Gayle To Close

Posted by Foobooz on August 14th, 2009

We can’t say we were surprised when we received word that Gayle will be closing on Friday, September 4th. There have been plenty of rumors swirling and dropping the liquor license turned out to be the writing on the wall. What was a bit unusual though was that the news didn’t sneak out via a disappointed employee but rather was released by a big-time New York PR agency.

Daniel Stern has a lot of big plans for the Fall. He’s looking to open R2L and MidAtlantic. He even has a Daniel Stern Restaurants web site (complete with three letter acronym, DSR). We hope this is one step back and two steps forward for the talented chef.

Complete release after the jump.

GAYLE TO CLOSE

PHILADELPHIA (August 13, 2009) – After five successful years, Daniel Stern’s Gayle restaurant will close its doors after dinner service on Friday, September 4. Daniel Stern Restaurants (DSR) decided not to renew the lease, which is up this fall, to focus on its two imminent openings, MidAtlantic (slated to open in September) and R2L (slated to open in November).

“While this is certainly a bittersweet decision, we have some very exciting projects to focus on in the immediate future,” Chef Stern says. “The elements that made Gayle so beloved will definitely play major roles in our new restaurants.”

Stern received much acclaim for creative and innovative interpretations of American cuisine at his Philadelphia restaurants Gayle and Rae. Stern will continue his tradition of blending bold cuisine with dynamic spaces when he brings two exciting new projects, MidAtlantic and R2L to Philadelphia this fall.

Gayle was pretty good but why is this guy such a Philebrity? Who keeps fronting this guy cash for restaurants that he runs into the ground?

  2. Mark Says:

Exactly Barry. And the folk at Talula’s Table can’t get a loan?

  3. Patty Says:

Gayle is easily the best restaurant I have ever dined in. It is wonderful to know of the closing in advance and have the opportunity to dine at Gayle one last time. I am very excited to see the new restaurants Daniel has created.

  4. Michael Says:

Gayle has been one of my favorite restaurants in the city for a few years now. The food was amazing and innovative and the service has always been fantastic. I will be sad to see it go but am happy I had the chance to experience it while it was here. I am looking forward to see what is next for Daniel and his team. They are some of the best in their field.

  5. Scott Says:

By far my favorite restaurant in the city! As I am sad to see it go, I cannot wait to see what Chef Stern has in store for us with his next 2 ventures. He is truly one of Philly’s finest treasures!

  6. Tamera Says:

Some of the most delicious dishes and overall dining experiences I’ve ever had have been at Gayle or Rae and I’ve lived in some of the best foodie towns in the country (San Francisco and NYC). I’ve always been pleasantly surprised and impressed with Daniel Sterns creative flavor combinations. Yeah I’m disappointed in the closing of Gayle as I was Rae but I suspect R2L and MidAtlantic will live up to the hype.

  7. Just Me Says:

    Wow, shill much?

  8. Matthew Says:

Wow. Sad to see Gayle close, but looking forward to dining at two new exciting restaurants. I can’t wait to see the view from the 37th floor of 2 Liberty.

  9. Barry G Says:

    Just Me,
No way, D Stern is obviously this good, that’s why he can afford to announce all his restaurant closings via big-time PR firms. All his fans came out of the woodwork to post on Foobooz and Meal Ticket for him.

D Stern has really blown that PYT guy out of the water in terms of PR prowess. Of course, these press releases cost a lot more than Twitter posts. Ever since Gayle opened, it’s been “Daniel Stern’s this,” “Daniel Stern’s that.” He became an immediately philebrity with no real basis. Based on how the announcements about his places read, you’d think he is another Jose Garces but in reality there is no way this guy has paid any of his PR firm bills with restaurant profits. Not dissing on his food–I like it–just lamenting the sad state of Philly celebrity status. Where were the impeccably laudatory comments when Ansill closed?

  10. The Interventionist Says:

Gary and Just Me, stay on message or more of the same will be spewed into this thread to drown you out.

  11. Ronnie Says:

    Barry,
Seriously..”he became an immediate Philebrity with no real basis” ???
I guess you weren’t around when he was at Le Bec or when national food mags actually noticed someone in Philadelphia.

  12. Barry G Says:

    Ronnie,
There are a lot of former La Bec Fin chefs around town, and they get rightfully noted for it, but that doesn’t mean they get their name mentioned prominently in every little blurb about their restaurants. The point I’m trying to make is that it’s all PR-generated hype with not enough substance to back it up. Do you think David Ansill would be able to get financing to put a glitzy restaurant in a high rise? Particularly after a spectacularly expensive fail at a different high rise?

  13. Barry G Says:

In a related note, Foobooz may want to consider real user accounts. The guest commenting mechanism makes shilling too easy. Note the post on Noble. The compliments could very well be legit, or they could be shills. No way to tell without a post history to back up the user names.

  14. Josh A Says:

wait, so you’re saying that people might lie on the internet.

    I won’t believe it

  15. The Interventionist Says:

Barry G, I think you’re overestimating the value foobooz, and the bulk of its readers, put into the comments. I mean, the site itself is basically an aggregator of reviews and comments, usually without any real editorial framing; and you expect it to police its peanut gallery? If a nervous PR or “viral media contractor” spams up a post, the savvy will see through it and the dupes were probably already hooked by the hype anyway.

  16. Ronnie Says:

Barry I was out of town a bit – sorry for the delay – I bring up the Le Bec reference not because he worked as a chef there, obviously many chefs around town have worked there – how many were at the helm after the 5th mobile star was wone back? I can’t imagine those with enough financial power would back someone they don’t find substance in, PR or not. And regardless of location, you cannot compare the food at Gayle to Ansil.
