Can Jose Garces Be The Next Iron Chef?

Posted by Foobooz on July 30th, 2009

next_iron_chef-showJose Garces (Amada, Tinto, Distrito, Chifa and Village Whiskey) will be among the 10 contestants (we will never say chef-testants) competing on The Next Iron Chef, set to premier on Sunday, October 4th on the Food Network. Garces of course defeated Bobby Flay on Iron Chef America last year and now he looks to cement his national status by appearing on the popular Food Network series.

With this news following on the heels of Jennifer Carroll and Jennifer Zavala being announced to appear on Bravo’s Top Chef it looks to be an exciting fall for Philadelphia chefs on TV.

Speaking of which, Foobooz is looking for a TV Correspondent to cover these shows and provide recaps. If you’re interested, please check out the Foobooz Jobs section for details.

Check out all ten contestants after the jump.

  • Nate Appleman (Chef/Butcher, New York, NY)
  • Dominique Crenn (Chef de Cuisine, Luce at InterContinental San Francisco, San Francisco, CA)
  • Brad Farmerie (Executive Chef, Double Crown, Madam Geneva, PUBLIC and The Monday Room, New York, NY)
  • Amanda Freitag (Executive Chef, The Harrison, New York, NY)
  • Jose Garces (Executive Chef & Owner, Amada, Tinto, Distrito, Chifa, Philadelphia, PA)
  • Eric Greenspan (Executive Chef & Owner, The Foundry on Melrose, Los Angeles, CA)
  • Jehangir Mehta (Executive Chef & Owner, Graffiti, New York, NY)
  • Seamus Mullen (Executive Chef & Partner, Boqueria Flatiron and Boqueria Soho, New York, NY)

  • Roberto Treviño (Executive Chef & Owner, Budatai, San Juan, PR)

No, I don’t think so. He’s over a month late on opening the doors at Village Whiskey so he doesn’t strike me as someone who works well on deadlines. Oh and BTW, Tinto should consider taking out a couple tables…it gets packed in there with a half dozen people.

  2. rory Says:

cmon, opening a restaurant on time is not akin to cooking a meal in 1 hour.

I wonder if Garces’ complicated sauces, etc. will be a good match for the iron chef experience…and i’m a much bigger fan of top chef than iron chef, so i’m saddened a bit. but go philly!

  3. Iberico Says:

The majority of restaurants open late.

  4. Barry G Says:

My recent meal at Distrito was pretty blah. I’m afraid Garces is losing focus on the food with all these openings (you didn’t even mention his new take-out place) and TV appearances. Still I got mad love for the guy and so many great meals I’ve had at his restaurants. Make Philly proud Jose!

Well, he’s been on Iron Chef already and managed to win.

  6. mazza3 Says:

distrito is pretty dern good, so you should go back for more than just one meal…..

  7. Barry G Says:

    @Mazza3
Yeah, this was UC Dining Days, that may have had something to do with it.

  8. perou Says:

I heard that he won, and he’ll be the next iron chef…

  9. bob Says:

restaurants hardly ever open on-time and i bet it’s even harder to do so when you’re filming a tv series such as the next iron chef.

  10. Jersey Says:

Most restaurants in the city do not open as planned because of Liquor License and Philadelphia Gas Works issues.

  11. Truth Says:

    @ Barry G

Please never conduct a rating or review of a restaurant during a Restaurant Week.

  12. RSR Says:

Most restaurants actually open late because the designers and owners are never really sure what anythign is going to look like till it is built. then they want it changed.

  13. Mike Wilcox Says:

Jose Garcia is the winner of the 2009 Next Iron Chef Competition. Fact.

  14. m3mly Says:

I worked w Jose last week on the Celebrity Cheff Foundation,,,wich was held at the Inside Park at Saint Bart’s in NYC….The guy was the coolest chef…very well organized, very polite to everybody, preety fast and he’s dishes came out so beautyfully decorated…As i was having a conversation with him and his Sou chef,,,they told me that he’s gonna be the next iron chef….regardles to my point of view,he realy deserves it.

  15. Mendigo Says:

Jose’s salty grub destroys all competition. Vandal Graffiti artists included. Sabes Philadelphia with 2 Iron chefs?

  16. Janet Says:

Jose Garcia shined during the big win over Fav Bobby Flay last year. I knew he had Iron Chef potential at that time. He seemed well organized, and according to the judges, his food was superb! No other Iron Chef would like to see him again in a competition; this is why I felt he would be the likely winner in the 2009 Next Iron Chef competition. All his dishes looked great and he showed he could accomplish different cuisines.

Congratulations and Blessings to Philadelphia’s Jose!

  17. Paul H Says:

So when do we know for sure where Jose finishes??!?
