I think it’s more a clever way to get a photo of you as many “high profile” lounges and restaurants are more about your look and attitude than your serving skills.

whats the big deal? they are going to look for it anyway

It’s to save them the hassle of looking it up themselves, probably. An employer who doesn’t look those things up these days, well… I’m not going to get started on what I should have learned about the au pair I hired and fired within two weeks, if I’d only looked for her Facebook page…

actually, it doesn’t

Several reasons they do it this way:
1)so they don’t invite a discrimination suit/sound like the shallow assholes they are by requesting a photo directly
2)so they can make sure you don’t have any Michael Phelps/Kate Moss photos of yourself doing drugs, giving lap dances, behaving badly however, etc.
3)look for links you’d put up to any press you might have received in the past if they’re considering you for a position in management or for executive chef.

Having been a manager where we all knew but it was the unspoken rule our server’s had to have a “look”, its definitely a way to ask for a photo without asking for one.

When I hired people I always googled them and inspected their Myspace/Facebook. Those pages are unbelievably revealing.
One applicant listed “knives” as his main interest. Coupled with the pictures, it sent his resume straight to the recycling bin.

Most people lock down their Facebook pages, so the restaurant is not going to get very far unless it is accepted as a friend.

I understand why an employer would ask for this but waht self-respecting employee would give this. there’s hundreds of restaurants in this city

whats the big deal? a lot of people post their job history on facebook. you would think by now people would understand that anything you put on the internet is instantly public.
as far as pictures of servers snorting coke and giving lap dances.. pretty much sounds like every restaurant employee ive ever known, met or worked with, again.. who cares
