Best Fried Pickles

Posted by Foobooz on March 10th, 2009

memphis_picklesWhile we were doing our Around the Web links bonanza we pulled Veggicurious’  best fried pickles post aside because we’ve kind of become obsessed with fried pickles.

Veggicurious unabashedly declares the Memphis Taproom’s the finest in the city. We’re also fans of the cornmeal crusted discs at El Camino Real and the crunchy side served with the pulled pork at Pub & Kitchen.

Are we missing any standouts? Where do you find your favorite fried pickles?Pickles at El Camino Real

Era (28th & Poplar) has spear-style fried pickles. But I’ve never had them, so I can’t speak to their quality.

The Khyber does some mean fried pickles.

I think Pub & Kitchen stopped serving the fried pickle (which was delicious). P&K usually served the fried pickle with the pulled pork sandwich, but I ordered that dish this past Sunday and the pickle was not fried.

A Full Plate serves some pretty good ones–they’re whole gherkins and not too greasy.

I found the fried pickles at Memphis Taproom a bit funky tasting. Maybe it was the oil that day.

As bad as it sounds, the fried pickle chips Hooters serves were great when I had them a few years ago.

I don’t care for any pickles but Tritone has had them for ages

Had some delicious cornmeal crusted ones at Standard Tap on Sunday. They make their pickles homemade too (you can buy them by the jar!) and were cut into thick chips.

Trend is kind of getting old already now that every gastropub has put them on the menu, though I’d really like to see someone take them in a bold new direction. No one thought of beer-battered pickles for beer week? And haven’t found one that beats the tempura battered pickle spears at Mac 24/7 in Waikiki. A light batter is def the was to go and diggin the spear shape over the chips, as the center still stays cold and crisp!

Ohh man, ask and you shall receive! My mind has been blown…

I call for funnel cake batter dipped deep fried kool-aid pickles!

Royal has the cornmeal disc version too. and their own pickles.

That seafood place right across from City Hall has some spears. Is someone taking notes on all this and publishing a fried pickle guide to philly?
