Kanella Serves Top Breakfast

Posted by Foobooz on February 27th, 2009

kanella

Esquire Magazine comes up with the 59 best breakfast places in America and Philadelphia’s Kanella makes the list. We’ll pay no attention that Holiday Inn Express also is in there and we’ll ignore that Kanella’s web site doesn’t mention breakfast or even brunch. But those are just details, it’s Friday and we’d rather celebrate that Philadelphia’s lone Cypriot  restaurant has gotten some national accolades.

The Cypriot breakfast plate tastes heartier and more serious than its American counterpart: Sunny-side eggs fried in olive oil have a thick yolk and crunchy underlining, grilled halloumi and lounza (ham) are salty slabs, and the coffee is made Turkish-style by boiling finely powdered roasted beans (mixed with sugar) over a propane burner. Let the dregs settle.

Breakfast is part of their lunch menu. In addition to what’s mentioned in the article, they also have a tasty scrambled eggs with pasturma and potatoes. It’s simple but somehow they elevate it to another level. Also, the cypriot version of “eggs in purgatory” is quite tasty, I think they called it shakshouka.” I used to eat breakfast there before they got rid of their saturday brunch hours (now it’s lunch from Tu-fr). naybe this article will encourage them to reopen on saturdays and sundays. They also have a meat pie that’s quite tasty.

But Kanella doesnt actaully SERVE breakfast or even brunch, which I noted in my blog two weeks ago. The other places in the article actually SERVE breakfast. So I have to wonder who actually led Francine Maroukian to include KANELLA…..

I dunno man, maybe she loved the breakfast?

I do. Like it was mentioned already, they have a lot of breakfast items on the Lunch menu and always have. I go all the time since I live around the block. Last week the waiter told me they are reopening brunch in a week or two! I love the place so win for me!
