Where to Watch the Debate Tonight?
Posted by Kirsten Henri on October 2nd, 2008
We know this might be hard to believe in this day and age, but some of us at Foobooz World Headquarters do not have a TV or the cable that makes it function. Which means that we cannot watch important things like Mad Men without downloading it to itunes or the vice-presidential debate without going to a bar with a TV.
So we’re putting the question to you: what Philly bar would YOU recommend as a good place to take in the debate? Sarah Palin likes the Irish Pub, but we want to know what you think…
The criteria after the jump.
We’re looking for a bar that has a TV with the sound on (you think that would be obvious, but during the presidential debate, the bar at the corner of our block had the TV tuned to the debate, but the sound was off and rap music was blaring, which is probably how you want to ‘watch’ the debate when you’re totally high on cocaine like the patrons of this bar tend to be).
We’re also looking for a non-partisan environment, if that’s even possible in this day and age. It would be nice if there was food and it was tasty.
Thoughts? Recommendations? Did anyone watch the presidential debate at a bar?

I ended up watching the first debate at South Philly Bar & Grill. I totally did not expect them to put it on (I was there to watch the game), but when the time came they changed half the TVs from the Phillies to the debate (politely asking patrons what they wanted to watch), and put the sound for the debate on.
There was a table of Obama volunteers there, so the crowd was mostly pro-Obama, but not obnoxiously so.
Maybe they will do something similar tonight. Although, tonight’s Phillies game is a playoff match…

I think a better idea is to go to your corner bar and get some cocaine; you’ll feel better about our nation’s future that way.
(You can also stream the debate online, I believe, but make sure you have flip4mac and Silverlight installed.)

Abraccio in West Philly was pretty good for watching the Obama-McCain debate. There were two TVs, so you could see and hear from any seat at the bar or at a table in the restaurant.
Non-partisan? It’s West Philly, so I don’t think so. But Abraccio’s is a family restaurant, so everyone was very polite.
Food?..eh. But after a pint, a pile of nachos always taste good.

I watch all things political at Doobie’s. Its never done my wrong. I’m sure they will have a tv on the game and one on the debate.

I watched the first debate at Finnigan’s Wake– they had the whole bottom floor reserved.
Tonight there is a debate watch organized by the Obama Jewish Leadership Committee aimed specifically at young Jewish professionals. They are having Rep. Josh Shapiro, Deputy Speaker of the PA House of Representatives there to speak briefly as well. It’s at J.L. Sullivans, 200 South Broad Street.

Good to know about abbracio. Too bad they have little in the way of decent bar food, but good to know as a last resort. Leroy’s and Dock Street were no-gos last time. Leroy’s was promising but then the lounge act blared over the debate and dock street had a screen the size of an infant’s head with poor audio. C’mon W.Philly!
I wish I had stayed @ Ly Michael’s last time. Anyone know if they’ll be hosting it again?
