Tale Of The Washed Chop At DaVinci

Big time restaurant critics aren’t immune to restaurant gaffes and Craig LaBan came face-to-face with a doozy at South Philadelphia’s DaVinci.

Hmm. Seems kind of douchy for Craigy to bring a dining guest who is “violently allergic to sugar” to accompany him on a review. Restaurant doesn’t sound great, but that was weak on his part.

I agree that it was ill-considered to invite the guest. I suspect that under any other circumstances she would have ordered the veal chop without the sauce entirely (as opposed to having it served on the side, presumably for LaBan’s benefit). But, taking LaBan at his word, the issue was disclosed, presumably with sufficient emphasis.
The fact of the matter is that there is a significant portion of the population out there possessed of myriad food allergies. This should not be news to anybody working in a kitchen, and the waitstaff should be trained to be alert to and to communicate such restrictions accordingly.
This would have been a minor footnote to the review had they served her a new chop instead of wiping off and reserving the original piece of meat.
