Pope + Palin + Pub = Conspiracy Theory

Posted by Foobooz on September 26th, 2008

Quite a storm developed when we posted that Sarah Palin was headed to the Irish Pub for the Presidential debate tonight. And perhaps the biggest unanswered question remains, why the Irish Pub? Co-owner Mark O’Connor wasn’t a whole lot of help. We’re not sure we can answer the why either but have to point out this isn’t the first time conservatives and the Irish Pub have crossed paths. Just back in April, Irish Pub chef Colleen McAvaddy was invited to cook for the Pope while he was in New York.

So what’s going on here? Have we been so distracted by the frat boys, car bombs, plasma TVs and abnormally tall bartenders that we’ve missed that the Irish Pub is some sort of nexus of conservatism?

Maybe the Union League is just a distraction?

So are you suggesting that the Irish Bar should reject customers based on politics? You people are creeps. They have the right to wine and dine as anyone else. Wtf do the politics of a person have anything to do with where they hold the event, even if the event is political. A venue is needed, and owner Mark O’Connor is a businessman. Why should he deny himself the business and profits. This line of thinking is deluded and though, you may question my politics after reading this as well, I know for a fact, that no one would even object to Obama or Biden having an event there…not even conservatives. Stop looking everything through your jaded vision and treat all candidates with respect and honor, whether you agree with them or not!

Whether or not the conspiracy theory is warranted in this particular instance, it is certainly not the case that the politics — or more generally, views — of a businessperson don’t play a role in who he chooses to do business with. Wouldn’t there be raised conservative eyebrows if a bar held an event for some stereotypically liberal group (say, a gay wedding banquet, an abortion rights organization, anti-war ralliers…), and wouldn’t the fact that the event were held there affect their opinions about both the owner and the establishment?

  3. Emmkay Says:

I didn’t read this post as a call to reject the Irish Pub for their politics or a call for the Irish Pub to reject customers. Rather, it just notes what a coup it is for the Irish Pub to host a VP candidate on such a big night – as it was a big coup for the Irish Pub to cook for the Pope. Don’t overreact.

    Jeez, holy sensitivity!
Have we gotten to the point that a fun food blog need walk a bipartisan PC line in it’s commentary so it doesn’t get nasty comments? More importantly, what demographic’s drink will she choose – Protestant Bushmills or Catholic Jameson?

  5. Jackie Chang Says:

Its not about sensitivities or that my reaction is over the top…its the fact that the post indicates that this is a venue catering to conservatives, and that certainly has the ability to hurt ones business, especially in our city here. That is all I am saying.

  6. Janet Says:

Who cares why the Irish Pub? Does every business have to justify why they host certain events? This is getting scary.

I thought Foobooz was about food, apparently I was wrong. Why don’t you post on Goode’s behavior this week if you want to get political? At least you could keep it local, but of course that might not be politically correct, right?

your reaction is over the top
no one suggested that and the poster is not a creep for reporting on this
    you, sir, are an idiot

This Week’s Sign Of The Apocalypse (Previous Headline from Foobooz) about this topic.

Nipsey Russell from Philly blog, how is the headline above not over the top for a “food blog?” Please explain your position.

  9. Jakkie Says:

The real reason Sarah Palin went there – a person working on the campaign that sets of up her events is from Philly. He hangs out at the Irish Pub. It is simple as that.

  10. rory Says:

blogs are just that blogs–free to post whatever they want however they want. smh. i thought it was funny–food blogs generally aren’t fans of the irish pub and philadelphians generally aren’t fans of Sarah Palin. it fit. deal with it.
