Midday at Minar

Posted by Kirsten Henri on September 10th, 2008

Minar Palace Opening Day

I swung by Minar Palace today because, like the rest of you, I couldn’t quite believe that it was really and truly going to be open today after so many false alarms. But it was! It’s true! I had chicken saag over rice (decent portion, $7.95) and naan for lunch and it was pretty darn great.

The digs are sweet too – especially compared to their previous hole-in-the-wall on Sansom Street. It sports a sort of a moody maroon-deep red palette and is stocked with plenty of tables.

After waiting forever, I tried to call and put in a take-out order, only to be put on hold over and over again, so I gave up and went straight over there. At this point I was pretty sure God just did not want me to have this food. I got there around 8:20 and ordered, it was obvious things weren’t totally in sync and it appears the cash register isn’t hooked up completely yet, so they had to add everything by hand. But I kicked myself for not having the patience to come another day, and dealt with it. And am I happy I did. Solid chunks of white meat chicken in the chicken mahkhani, the sauce was smooth, just thick enough (I find that some places make it too thin), the portion “looked” small but I was stuffed at the end of it. It was VERY spicy, for my white girl tongue, but I like it like that and so did not mind. The rice was spiced nicely. I also had the onion paratha, each side was nicely browned and had a ton of onions. And when you add in the price tag – 13 dollars – it just add 90 price points. Amazing.
