Azul Is Blue
Posted by Foobooz on September 3rd, 2008

Adam Erace finds Washington Square West’s Azul Cantina a suitable place to get liquored up but the food makes him blue.
Tossed with shriveled segments of orange and grapefruit, the citrus-and-jicama salsa is an oddly dry, oddly flat bowl of tropical mulch attacked by sloppy knife work. The amateurish tostadas topped with spoonfuls of peppy chipotle goat cheese and wilted cilantro were something out of a Voorhees housewife’s Cinco de Mayo party. Flank steak is badly overcooked twice. Perky salsa verde makes an attempt to moisturize the meat in some tacos, while the beef tucked between soft square buns in the torta sliders taste like lumps of charcoal. Like a room-temperature shot of Cuervo, they do not go down easy.

Anyone else notice when Erace likes a place, he has very little to say besides what the thesaurus gives him for “good?” It’s only when he goes on these slam rants that his prose gets ridiculously turgid and purple. I mean, a twisted allusion only transparent to readers of Fangoria magazine? C’mon! What editor thought this hack was worth putting on the payroll? For what’s it’s worth, Adam baby, Jason cut clean.

Cheesesteak-
I’m not even sure what Fangoria magazine is.

apparently, it’s a horror magazine. I’d bet its the reference to Voorhees (as in Jason, not the town).
Of course, i saw it as the town, not the horror story, so…

Oh, right. Thanks, Rory. Indeed I was referencing the Jerz town, not Friday the 13th. I hope the killer from Scream doesn’t try to go all Drew Barrymore on me with an impromptu horror quiz.

Dude, ever since you flubbed Yosemite Sam and Elmer Fudd back when you made your hatchet job of Time, I wrote your purple allusive lexicon off as pop, not geography. I thought the suburb too, eventually, but figured you were being “arch” with the knife-play … as you’re wont to do.

so amped that cheese is off my case.
i liked the voorhees housewife bit.
definitely hit the synonym-for-blue-limit, though. back in may, my food blog gang was all “Oh, check my wit, 10th and Spruce is the bluest corner now.”
love,
