I think gastropubs must be the most dominant definable restaurant species. You say gastropub and I kind of know what I'm getting into... but BYO covers all manner of subspecies.

well, the food is actually very good at continetnal or budakan or many other starr joints- even if the scene isnt your scene. i think BYO is the defining restaurant type in the city and differentiates us from other cities. if you ever hear me utter the word "gastropub" you are free to kick me in the nuts, twice, but if thats what north third is, then i guess i like them....but i'm not saying it again!

I picked SS precisely because they're practically just tourist attractions. Most people I know outside of Philly don't know much about the BYOB or Gastropub scenes but they get all excited about the Continental and Buddakan.

The 'gastropub' thing has kind of been taken to extremes in that now any bar serving food from something other than a deep fryer can get lumped into that category and it's giving otherwise dive bars excuses to hike up food prices. I enjoy being able to go to a relaxed dinner at St. Stephen's Green or Aspen but I don't want the gastropub mindset creeping in on my Happy Hours at the North Star.

I'm going Gastropub, if only because that's my preference. (Though BYO's are great when BYOing some delicious Foodery selections.)

I've been finding SS's places to be little more than tourist attractions.
