Foobooz - Your guide to food and drink in Philadelphia

Recession Specials Guide

Posted by Kirsten Henri on April 8th, 2008

If you’re into dining out, as we are at Foobooz, all of the news about an impending (or already in progress) recession might send a shiver down your spine and directly into your wallet. Every day there’s a new and more dismal report on the skyrocketing prices of raw ingredients and rising transportation expenses due to high gas prices. These spiraling costs have already hit pizza places–and they will undoubtedly creep into other eateries as well, if they haven’t already.

Does it spell the end of the voracious dining out that has transformed Philadelphia in the past decade? Will you have to stop eating in restaurants and bars and gastropubs and start…gulp…cooking at home?

Put away your package of ramen noodles and relax. You just have to be a little more creative, that’s all. Many restaurants have great deals on certain nights of the week and we’ve broken them down for you in this Recession Specials Guide by day of the week and price point: $10 and under, $10-$20, $20 and over [but still a deal]. We’ve also included a list of happy hours that offer free or discounted food.

This is a work in progress and we’re actively looking for deals to add, so if you’ve got ‘em, send ‘em along, but only if they include a food component - this is NOT a drinking guide (not that there’s anything wrong with that, we’re just trying to keep it focused).

RANDOM BARGAINS AND RUMORS

Under $10

DiBruno Brothers - Show up after 7pm and order a sandwich. You may just be offered two for the price of one. When asked if this was always the case the clerk said, “as long as you don’t ask for it.”

Capogiro - Stop in to Capogiro for a late evening panini and you’re likely to go home with a second one free.

Fair Food Farmstand - Occasionally, the Farmstand has their frozen pastured/organic/hormone-free meats and poultry for half off the original price due to packaging issues. The meat is perfectly fine and for half the price, I don’t care if it’s wrapped in an old pair of sweatpants.

  1. Buckethead Says:

Konak has $2 Tuesdays, each plate on their menu is two bucks. There’s a 5-plate minimum, but it’s still a feast for the money.

  2. Tyler Says:

National Mechanics has $5 cheese and veggie burgers at lunch every day. Part of me doesn’t want people to know about this, you’re all lucky I was a boy scout.

  3. tony gome Says:

mcormcks and smicks, 1.95 happy hour 2 times a day.

  4. mike Says:

Davio’s has a daily happy hour from 5-7. Half price certain drinks and lots of free pizza. Pizza is decent if you get it right out of the oven.

I believe they also do a half price bar menu after 10pm every day.

  5. Meg Says:

    Farmicia’s happy hour 5-7 M-F, half-off drinks.

  6. MB Says:

Palace at the Ben has daily happy hours with free hors d’oeuvres, $5 wine and cocktails and $3 beer. Also lunch thalis are a ton of food for $12.95.

  7. Maria Says:

XIX has half price on their 19 specialty cocktails Mon-Fri making them only $5.00.

La Croix gives half price on wines on Mondays. I think Derek’s does the same on Sundays. Also, I believe there is no corkage fees at the Prime Rib on Sundays, Farmacia on Wednesdays, and Positano Coast on Sundays and Mondays.

Zot also has an all-you-can eat mussels special on Monday nights.

  8. Jen Says:

Adobe cafe has an awesome deal on Mondays and Tuesdays. Two entrees and either a pitcher of beer or a bottle of wine for $30. You can substitute margaritas for $5 more. And the food is DELICIOUS!

  9. Maria Says:

    From today’s Zagat email….

As the dollar continues to get squeezed, it’s important to get the most out of yours. Drop by for complimentary apps at the weeknight happy hours of Rae (4:30–7 PM), Alma de Cuba (5–7 PM) and Brasserie Perrier (5–7 PM). Also, Le Bec-Fin, Philly’s No. 2 rated for Food, has been reconfigured from a prix fixe to an à la carte menu, which means that a couple now can do some serious dining for under $100 (plus alcohol and tip).

  10. Jill Says:

I am so bookmarking this post.

    Also, some additions:

Aya’s Cafe (22nd and Arch) and Chris’s Jazz Cafe (15th and Sansom) both have cheap ($5-6) lunch specials. Chris’s also has beer specials during the day—something like fifty cents for a lager.

And don’t forget that Wednesday is half-price can night at Good Dog (15th and Locust)!
