Spot Review: Sunday Supper

Posted by Kirsten Henri on February 11th, 2008

Last night, we checked out Supper’s monthly $35 three-course prix fixe “Sunday Supper” and we highly recommend the experience. With reservations. Meaning, you need to make them and you should be aware of a few things:

1. Because there’s just one seating (6:30p.m.) everyone arrives at the same time. This results in a traffic jam at the front door, despite having several staff members hosting. We’d like to see the restaurant stagger the reservations from 6:15 to 6:45, since they didn’t start serving until 7p.m. anyway. In the meantime, bring your patience.

2. You’re allowed to BYOB at Sunday Supper, or you can order from their wine list. We were glad our BYOB wines were screw-top because it took quite a while before anyone came over to the table to offer to open any of them. We didn’t mind waiting half an hour for the food to start coming out, but waiting is so much more pleasant with a full glass in front of you. Also, we are much more pleasant with a full glass in front of us.

These are quibbles and we imagine they’re still working out the kinks, but the food was fantastic: risotto Milanese, a tender slow-roasted pork shoulder with sweet potato gratin and shaved fennel salad, and for dessert, delicate olive oil cake with Nutella ice cream and a blood orange schmear. The portions were generous and they even came around and offered seconds of the gratin.

The highlight was not having to make any decisions. Our group just sat, ate was served to us, drank ourselves silly and had a great time. Plus we were home by 9:30!

We’d suggest making reservations soon, word is La LaBan is reviewing Supper this coming Sunday and we’re betting he smothers it in LaBan love. Consider yourselves warned.
