The Inky’s Michael Klein has tucked a delicious morsel into an otherwise innocuous post on Finn McCool’s today:
…talk is growing that Jason Evanchik of Vintage on 13th Street is planning to renovate a watering hole on Sansom into something considerably more stylish and (lest I identify the existing joint) less Teutonic.
Please, Jason Evanchik of Vintage, do not add any stylishness to the hideous wonder that is that Teutonic joint on Sansom Street. Clean it, improve the food, tidy up the beer list and, for Pete’s sake, keep the dirndls. For inspiration, you might look to the new and improved, yet still appealing Ortlieb’s.
Midtown Village has enough style, it needs a little old-school quirkiness to keep it real.

People aren’t always ready to accept change…that’s kind of an obvious statement….
But, I think this could be a great thing.
I would love to have an authentic bier garten in Philly that doesn’t smell the second upon entry.
New York has two now…but Ludwigs has had its day.
The last couple times I went in there…my bartenders were drunk, the place smelt worse than Septa’s bathrooms, and the food was barely edible. The saving grace is that Aventinus was on tap but even that took 10 minutes minimum to pour.
Evanchik has had a lot of success with Vintage.
I don’t get there as often as I like, but its one of my favorite places in the city.
And I love quirk, I live for quirk, but I don’t think anyone should dismiss something a little snazzy in a place that has been long needing a makeover.

I think we’re all saying the same thing. Philadelphia needs a real German bier garten kind of place. I just hope that’s what we get, not Vintage II. Not that there would be anything particularly wrong with that. Just not as cool as a cleaned up reimagined Ludwig’s.

Not that it is any consolation….but I just wanted to let everyone know that a new group has been planning on opening a new reinvented real German Bierhall in Philadelphia. The biggest problem we have had is location. Financing, business plan, menu etc. is already taken care of. Finding a good layout in a great location is a little more difficult especially with the number of new places opening every month. Stay tuned we are working our hardest.

How about the old Ortliebs bottling building in NoLibs that was Poor Henry’s and the cabaret for the Fringe Fest. Or is that destined to become Ortliebs lofts or something.
Plenty of room for big tables and already has a German beer tradition.

Grad Hospital has tons of corner properties that are abandoned, not sure if they’d fit your layout criteria but it’s worth a look.

That is one area we have not looked at very intently. I will take a look over the weekend. Keep the location ideas coming. A perfect layout could be best described as like McGillian’s. It should really be more square and open, but not huge. If there is any area for an outside area that is even better.

The Ortliebs Jazzhaus on 3rd is a different building from the bottling building on American Street.
Perhaps a warehouse near Broad & Washington where there were plans for a House of Blues.
Or up NoLibs way in the former Whiskey Dick’s.
