Name Game

Posted by Kirsten Henri on January 15th, 2008

We had a tepid response to the otherwise delectable Eric Ripert’s choice of name for his new restaurant in the Ritz-Carlton. It got us to thinking: what other restaurants out there have unfortunate names?

We recently passed an establishment called Fingers. In tiny letters underneath the sign, it said “piano bar”, but it’s still a mostly unappealing visual from a place that also serves food.

Any others out there?

Unfortunate (and seemingly increasing popular) name for a restaurant: any restaurant that uses its address/spatial location as all or part of its name (e.g. 707, Kitchen 233, XIX, 10 Arts). Twenty Manning at least spells out the number part. Make an effort, you’re opening a restaurant, not a post office. A name like Gayle or Ansill may not be all that creative, but I know the proprietors care enough about the place to put their name on it, or the name of someone close to them. Naming a place for its address makes me think the owner cared just enough to say to themselves ‘well, the number’s already on the building, may as well use it for a name’.

I used to play piano at “Happy Endings”.

I would imagine that “Swallow” in NoLibs would conjure up some unpleasant memories for a few female patrons.

Single letters are kind of stupid. Restaurant M. bistro M. G Lounge.

Oh and there’s a place in Jenkintown. Might have the dumbest name ever, Kitchen Bar Restaurant Cafe.

I’m not a fan of Astral Plane Milennium. Sounds like the restaurant is about to blast off into a faraway cosmic galaxy.

Sit on It Bar in South Philly. Totally awesome name. Love stumbling across places like this.

  7. Kirsten Henri Says:

It already did blast off, my dear – they closed back in July. Agreed – the name did seem to indicate there were pot brownies on the menu.

  8. Kay Says:

Astral Plane Millennium closed in July? I think you’re mixing up Astral Plane and Astral Plane Millennium, which opened in Oct. 07, my dear.

You are absolutely right, Kay. I should have known better than to doubt Adam.

It must have been those pot brownies that confused me.

I hate the Jose Pistola’s name because it reminds me of real bad, bland food that has been hyped for some reason I can’t figure out- because Fergie is a silent partner or something along those lines perhaps?

“The Smoked Joint” sounded like two 14-year-olds came up with it.

  12. Kay Says:

I think Jose Pistola’s food is incredible. Have you had the grouper taco or nachos? The nachos are hands-down the best in the city.

  13. Kirsten Henri Says:

Apparently, those 14-year-olds are also at work in the Big Apple:

This weekend, I walked by a lovely little Thai restaurant in NY called “Eat-Pisode”. Blech.

Just cruised by a ‘coming soon’ sign for a restaurant on South street called Bottom of the Sea … hmmmmm. Not so appealing.

  16. k Says:

Jose Pistola’s owner is named Joe Gunn – so I think it is actually pretty clever. And the food is great!

Se torna dificil colocar muebles en un piso con dimensiones pequeas. Muchas veces cuando nos mudamos y ya tenemos muebles nos debemos esforzar mucho para acomodar todas nuestras cosas y siempre algo tendremos que regalar.
