Beyond the BYOB and the Bistro

Posted by Kirsten Henri on January 17th, 2008

We have a lot of BYOB’s in Philly, for multiple reasons that have been dissected ad nauseum here and here and here. We’re currently in the midst of a French revolution with Coquette, Cochon, Zinc and the soon-to-open Starr spot Parc. Let’s not forget the steady stream of steakhouses.

At Foobooz, we’re wondering what kinds of restaurants YOU would like to see open in the next year? Do you want more husband-and-wife-helmed BYOBs? More roast pork stands? More Qdoba’s?

We can’t speak for Mr. Foobooz, but we love beer bars with food (a.k.a gastropubs) and think they’re the Philly signature food experience. So much so that we’ve championed them here. And we were rightfully appalled when Nation’s Restaurant News pretended that they were invented in New York, as was the San Francisco Chronicle’s food critic Michael Bauer.

Comment away.

Love the gastropubs too. I guess Ugly American in Pennsport qualifies as a gastropub and Devil’s Den is opening soon.

More Italian BYOBs! Psych. I’d like to see some more middle-Mexicans: fancier than a taqueria but not as upscale as Xochitl. Singaporean would be nice too.

I’m always a big fan of Spanish, but maybe a really great korean bbq and I’d love a place with tasty, healthy made to order sandwiches and salads – not just hoagies, cheesesteaks and pizza.

    Great Thai food.

    more brewpubs!!!
and a pizza taglio joint similar to la rossa on south broad would be great too.

This is probably a hair off-topic, but I would love to see more great bars in this city. There really aren’t very many places to just have great cocktails without being surrounded by twenty year-olds and loud music. Yes, I’m old and crotchety — but I do like to drink.

Sounds like you want to go to Southwark.

More gastropubs would be cool as well as another brewpub or two, but what I’d really like to see is something along the lines of a restaurant like Tinto, but with Peruvian cuisine.

I would LOVE a Chipotle. Delicious carnitas!

A REAL japanese ramen joint, and also Malaysian please (I would like more options than Penang and its carbon copy).
