Philadelphia Magazine finds a local place to get the Buffalo standard Beef On Weck, the Whip Tavern in Coatesville.
The beef is Dijon vinaigrette—marinated top round, slow roasted, and sliced thinly on a deli slicer. The rolls, which Kulp wanted to have shipped from Buffalo but found this cost prohibitive, are made by the Downingtown Wegman’s. Before serving, the beef slices are reheated in au jus, into which the top of the bun is also dipped. As for toppings, don’t even think of asking for anything but horseradish.

The Whip Tavern is one of our new faves.
It is an english pub but with real seasoning and the food is not overcooked. The shepards pie, beef and mushroom pie, steak au poivre, and fish and chips have all been ordered and have been excellent (hint: order the fish and chips on separate plates so they do not get soggy).
There is a great selection of beers both on tap and by the bottle. There are no wines but they will open yours for a mere $2.50.
The bread pudding is tasty but a bit dry. The cake in a carmelized sauce is to die for. Don’t think of ordering anything else!
The Welsh Rarebit appetizer is the best I have had but it will fill you up if you are planning both an entree and dessert. Hint: they don’t give you enough bread with it and will charge you $1.00 extra to get more!
We will definitely go back although my wife is grousing about the $1.00 for extra bread…
