Water Works Restaurant

Posted by Foobooz on November 1st, 2006

Water Works Restaurant and Lounge

Philadelphia Magazine reviews the Water Works Restaurant and like everyone else is absolutely blown away by the atmosphere. And like pretty much everyone else Philly Mag thinks the service and food needs to catch up a bit.

The gentle splash of the waterfall, the sweep of trees along the riverbanks, and the spectacle of solo scullers gliding toward Boathouse Row under the setting sun may be the loveliest perspective anywhere within our city limits. This natural asset is the best feature of a restaurant that is still settling into its spectacular space, already drawing more than 400 eager customers for dinner on some evenings. The kitchen is on its way to rivaling the view; the waitstaff has some catching up to do.

Had my first dinner last night and indeed was impressed with what has been done with the city’s most inspirational view and atmosphere ever to behold. Ed the restaurant’s general partner is a seasoned pro ruddering this expensive ship down murkey waters. I can’t say enough about the space, views and greetings we recieved at reception. actually was able to enjoy dinner outside on lovely November evening…boathouse row all a glow, gentle rain but ample cover, shame the overhead heaters had no propane…whoops. Oh, one more thing, from salads to desserts, it just may have been the most dissapointing meal I have ever had in the city of Phila. Darn, I heard they were having trouble with execution, but given the small turn out that evening, I had hoped for at least cuisine to match my appitite. Almost anything would have been acceptable given the beautiful surroundings and company…but alas, quite possibly the most poorly prepared dinner I have ever had. Even the menu is poorly planned and balanced. (hey guys, coould you make the font a wee bit larger for us folks over 40 years of age?)

Hopefully, they will improve, but I will need to wait until the kitchen turns over, Ed gets frustated with lack of customer count and bar biz…and the doors get closed for good, enter Mr. Starr…Steven notches yet another closed restaurant on his already burgining belt. (can you say Budahkahn 3?)

Worst restaurant in Philadelphia, made all the more pathetic by the misuse of the most marvelous location.
Not only is the service worse than terrible and the food less than Wawa, but the major conversation at every table around you is how repugnant the whole situation is.

There is a new entry for the “best of” in the Philadelphia restaurant scene and its name is the Water Works. Not sure who the owner pissed off to have so many people say so many mean things about him and his restaurant but the fact remains The Water Works Restaurant and Lounge does food and service like no other place in the city. Their octopus is the best I’ve ever had in America and their filet is steakhouse quality. I’ve been there 4 times and everytime I go it gets better. This last time the experience was so good I booked my fiance and I booked our wedding there. We are believers and are looking forward to having our big day in what we feel is the best kept secret in Philadelphia.
