Giwa

Elisa Ludwig of City Paper finds that everything tastes good at Giwa, the new Sansom Street Korean take-out spot.
Serving mostly traditional dishes, Giwa is quick-fix food with a full-service attitude. Though it has the spare, clinical aesthetic usually associated with carry-away containers and Thank You! bags, there’s room for about 50 people between a smattering of tables and counter seats. The open kitchen behind the cashier counter is the focal point, with the menu posted overhead. If you decide to sit, the food comes out as it’s ready, which is to say you may well end up with an entree before an appetizer.

It was just the other night that I sat down to enjoy a bowl of bulgogi with my friends. Three to four hours later I was bent over my toilet violently vomiting. I spent the rest of the night curled in pain on the floor of my bathroom, with a fever of 101 and vomiting EVERY HOUR until about 7:30am…at which point “other issues” began as well. I laid on the floor of my apartment crying — every bone in body hurt, my stomach felt like it was being cut out of my abdomen, the cramps made me feel like I was giving birth, it hurt to even open my eyes.
I was a real fan of this restaurant before this experience. Honestly, I have NEVER, never felt so badly in my ENTIRE life.
PS: all of us at dinner got sick. Don’t go to this place…it is SERIOUSLY not worth it.
