Bootsie’s Quality Fast Food
Posted by Foobooz on August 21st, 2006

Bootsie’s, higher end fast food opened this morning at 38 S 19th Street. Stop in for breakfast for organic egg sandwiches topped with cheese and meats like Applewood bacon, an Angus beef patty, or Portabella mushrooms with roasted peppers. All Breakfast sandwiches come with a free cup of Coffee.
Lunchtime intrigues with Kobe beef, Buffalo, Black Angus, and Ostrich burgers. You can also get you a Kobe or Buffalo hot dog. Sausages rise beyond Oscar Mayer with Italian Fennel, Rabbit & Veal, Andouille, Buffalo Chipotle, Chicken Wine Parsley and Chicken Apple.

Bootsie’s was very disappointing. I got a black angus burger, fries, and a soda for $10.50 and it would have been more but the rookie behind the counter forgot to charge me for the soda (she was too busy being rude). I wanted this place to be good because it is close to my office but I doubt I will give it a second chance. I asked for American cheese on my burger and was told that they don’t have it. Where am I? France? While waiting for my food to be made, I reviewed the menu and noticed that for Breakfast sandwiches, American and Cheddar cheeses are offered. I guess they just don’t serve American after 11:00 AM. And before you start thinking that I am some cheap slob who is just mad that I paid $10 for a burger, I would gladly pay up for a burger if it was good. The fries were way undercooked (a shame because they are the good kind of fries with some skin still on them), the soda was flat (another shame because they offer birch beer, which I like), and the bun felt like it had been softened in the microwave for some reason. The burger meat was okay but for $13 I’m going to Smith & Wolensky. Or I’ll go to 5 Guys and pay $8 for a better tasting burger. There are other things I don’t like about this place like the topping situation. The arugula is free but you will charge me 55 cents for tomato? Make up your mind. Just charge an extra quarter for the burger and make the toppings free. You’re already charging $6.95 (and that’s for the cheapest burger on the menu). The drinks: Lemonade, Limeade, or Iced Tea is $1.95, soda is $1.65. It is all self-service and it costs about 3 cents to produce. Pick a price: $1.95 or $1.65 and go with it. Soft drinks $1.95, have a ball.
I hope this place gets better.

One more thing: I know that the food is “organic” and therefore more expensive but “organic” should mean that the food tastes better too.

Interesting. For a place that bills itself as “fast food”, the prices don’t seem to fit. Hell, you can go to Monk’s and have a quality burger on LeBus bread for $7.
I tried Five Guys Burgers at their Malvern location. It’s definitely worth a visit. It’s cheaper than Bootsie’s, plus they have a wide range of toppings (such as jalapenos), all of which are no extra charge. The fries are excellent, as well.

REally seems to me they rushed this place to open. I’ve stopped in twice at breakfast time and the people there haven’t known how to run the register. There’s no good reason for that.
The sandwich itself was pretty good. i had the bacon egg and cheese. The applewood bacon was really good.
The other thing I think this place will have going for it is that it’s open till 4AM on weekends. And that will be clutch as there really isn’t a lot of after bar/club food out that way.
