Finally Tasting Water Works

Posted by Foobooz on July 27th, 2006

Water Works Restaurant and Lounge

Rick Nichols takes in the first night of the Water Works Restaurant and Lounge. The bar stools may not have arrived, the nine-foot water wall may not be installed, but the Water Works Restaurant was finally alive!
Vinilla butter poached lobster could be ordered, as well as grilled lollipop lamb chops. And watermelon sprinkled with feta. But it was the view that united the first night visitors.

You could witness the urban hurly-burly at a gentle, otherworldly remove – tractor-trailers negotiating the expressway, trains of tanker cars slipping across the horizon. This is as Olympian as it gets hereabouts, a place above it all to watch the sun going blood-orange and sinking, the machinery of the city softening in the dove-gray twilight, and outlining Boathouse Row, the stitching of lights sharpening in the dark.

Great job with ambience. Had a drink at the bar, and looked at wine list. Very expensive for glasses of wine and beer.
Wine by the glass is from $8.00 to $12.00, Yuengling is $2.00 more than at all the local Fairmount places, and the same goes for all other beers. I don’t think they want locals or repeat business. Will be interesting to see what happens when the first blush wears off, and they thenmay want those of us from the neighborhood.

    Jim,

How did the menu look? Did it look overpriced? I just hope they don’t think that the view will be enought to fill the tables on a nightly basis.

Still haven’t made it out there, but it’s definitely on my list.

    Mike,

Just had a quick look at the menu. Price range is $19.00 to $30.00 for entrees. Seems classic and varied. From what I saw being served – looks good. Like you, I intend to eat there as soon as things settle a bit more – and give the place a fair test, rather than base judgment on a first glance.

We just ate there on Monday 14th – the food was very good – the octopus appetizer was the best I’ve ever had. I do agree that the drinks are a little pricey – I guess they are trying to follow Starr’s lead – however, unlike most of Starr’s resturants the dining experience was much better. The view and the building ambiance are very nice. I will definately go back.
