A couple weeks ago we wrote that the only weekend of the year it was cool to be in Manayunk was the
bike race weekend. We thought it was a witty line and well, pretty much accurate. But that drew the ire of at least one Foobooz reader, who reacted angrily in the
comments> and suggested Castle Roxx is the place to be with their $1 drafts and the other specials.
Well maybe the
2006 Manayunk Arts Festival can make Manayunk cool. 275 artists showcasing an impressive variety of work including jewelry, ceramics, sculpture, photography, painting, glass, and mixed media. It’s this weekend and honestly, worth the stroll.

Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) provide extra services like frequent trash removal and street cleaning to a business area. But to Foobooz, a BiDs most important function might be food and drink events!
Right now the South Street Headhouse District is bringing you
8 Days of Eats, $15 & $30 specials at South Street area restaurants.
The University City District is going to be doing a similar thing next month with their
Dining Days. And in September, the
Center City District’s Restaurant Week returns.
And today is another
Market Wednesday for the East Passyunk BID. Enjoy classic jazz and swing tunes at 13th & Mifflin. Check out the farmer’s market at 11th & Tasker. Stroll the avenue as many merchants stay open late till 8 PM. And by then you should have worked up quite the appetite for any of the many restaurants along East Passyunk, whether the Italian of
Tre Scalini or the Mexican of
El Caballito.

Kirsten Henri looks at Radicchio, Italian BYOB that’s actually been around for a bit. We digest the review so you don’t have to. Enjoy.
Radicchio sits on the northern end of Old City, away from much of the hubbub. And there it is “neither disappointing nor exciting, but a perfectly nice place to pass an evening with friends.”
So if you happen to be in the area, enjoy.

Under the proposed Philadelphia smoking ban some neighborhood bars would have to choose between going non-smoking and being open on Sundays.
The smoking ban law that awaits the Mayor’s signature allows exemptions to bars whose income for food is less that 10-percent. But to stay open on Sunday, a bar must prove to the state that its food income is 30-percent or higher.
Quite the conundrum for some bar owners. Councilman Frank DiCicco is petitioning Harrisburg to change its Sunday requirements so there wouldn’t have to be a choice.

How about a six pack of beers of the moment? Here are six beers Foobooz would recommend right now.
- Modelo Especial at Cantina El Caballito, served rimmed with chili powder and salt.
- Sweaty Betty at the Royal Tavern. A delicious German style wheat beers with hints of clove and banana, without being overpowering. Perfect for a day when the temps tickle 90.
- Yards Saison at any of many local bars. Maybe even try it with a slice of orange.
- Tripel Karmeliet at the Black Door. With an almost champagne like feel, this sweet without being saccharine beer is always a treat.
- Bloody Ho at Eulogy. Half Hoegaarden and half Raspberry Lambic, this combination makes for a delicious treat.
- Boddington’s can for half priced on Wednesdays at the Good Dog.
